IT'S GIRL SCOUT COOKIE TIME YOUNG SALESWOMEN LEARN TIPS, TASTE WARES AT VAN NUYS KICKOFF.Byline: Lisa M. Sodders Staff Writer VAN NUYS - Forget about buying individual boxes of Girl Scout cookies. If the Girl Scout in question is Alicia Boyd of Burbank, you may end up buying them by the case. ``When you buy a (12-box) case, it comes with a free carrying case,'' said Boyd, 15, who sold 624 boxes last year. The carrying case is the box the cookies are shipped in, but it does have a handle, Boyd points out. Boyd was one of about 500 girls - ages 6 to 17 - who came to the Syncro Aircraft Hangar at the Van Nuys Airport Van Nuys Airport (IATA: VNY, ICAO: KVNY, FAA LID: VNY) is a public airport located in Van Nuys, California in the San Fernando Valley, within the Los Angeles city limits. on Saturday for the Girl Scouts Girl Scouts, recreational and service organization founded (1912) in Savannah, Ga., by Mrs. Juliette Gordon Low (1860–1927). It was originally modeled after the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides, organizations created in Great Britain by Sir Robert Baden-Powell during Cookie Sale Kickoff Carnival. The scouts sampled the cookies they will be selling, played cookie- themed carnival games

They also quizzed each other on details about the cookies and exchanged successful sales tactics. Resistance is futile. If a customer declines to buy a box of cookies, Alicia says, she always politely tells the potential customer, ``Thank you anyway, and have a nice day. ``They always come back,'' the bubbly future pediatrician said, with a grin. ``And they buy more than one box.'' Once, Alicia says, when she was 5, she spotted a man running into a bank. Alicia ran alongside him, asking him to buy cookies. The man told her, ``When I come out, I'm going to buy cookies from you because you kept up with me.'' One troop even has a poster with the Weight Watchers Point totals for each kind of cookie, said Alicia's mother, Susan Boyd. If people still don't want to buy the tempting treats, they can opt to donate the cookies back to the troops, who will in turn give them to homeless shelters or send them to men and women in military service stationed overseas. Scouts will sell door-to-door until March, when they will man cookie booths at area retail stores. Because of the ongoing grocery store strike, however, Girl Scout officials are asking other businesses to step up to the cookie plate and offer the girls space to sell their cookies. Susan Boyd, who is coordinating spaces for more than 500 scouts, said businesses have been very responsive. Not only are they giving back to the community, but they're scoring points with girls and teens who may someday become future employees. Cookie sales, Boyd says, teach the girls marketing and communication skills as well as goal-setting, strategy and budgeting. The members of Alicia's troop, for example, initially wanted to save for a trip to Italy, but decided after doing a little research that a trip to Hawaii was more within their reach and less of a hassle. Evaluating the investing and financing options available to a firm. In addition to cookie sales, community-service projects and camp activities, the program also exposes the girls to serious issues, but in a fun way. Barbara Felipe's North Hollywood troop of Girl Scouts, in fifth through seventh grades, chose to do a unit on the ideal boy, which might sound like a gigglefest, but the girls identify what makes a healthy relationship. Jasmine Stuczynski, 11, of Winnetka said being a Girl Scout was helping her choose her ideal career, by introducing her to different professionals. ``Being a brain surgeon Noun 1. brain surgeon - someone who does surgery on the nervous system (especially the brain) neurosurgeon operating surgeon, sawbones, surgeon - a physician who specializes in surgery is out,'' Jasmine said. ``We saw a TV show about that.
