Vives was not on hand to receive news that his album, ``Dejame Entrar,'' was in the running after having previously won a Grammy earlier this year for best tropical album. He is up for best record, album, song, contemporary tropical album, tropical song and music video.

Awards will be handed out in 40 categories, including the new best contemporary tropical album and best Christian album, during the third Latin Grammy Awards The Latin Grammy Awards were launched in 2000 with a telecast aired on CBS. Cruz, another past Grammy winner, received nominations for best record, album, salsa album and music video during the morning announcement at the Beverly Hilton.

Other top winners included the three nominations each that were picked up by rocker Miguel Bose, producer Emilio Estefan, rocker Juanes, composer Gian Marco and pop star Alejandro Sanz.

La Ley, Dori Caymmi, Circo and Sin Bandera each earned two nominations.

Sanz, the Spanish crooner, was the big winner at last year's Latin Grammys telecast that never was.

The ceremony was forced to shift gears just three weeks before its originally-scheduled Sept. 11 broadcast from Miami because of concerns about anti-Castro protesters opposed to the recognition of Cuban artists.

A low-key announcement in October ultimately replaced the globally televised show.

``Finalmente (finally)'' was how Enrique Fernandez, senior vice president and executive director of the Latin Recording Academy, remembered putting it on the day that the awards were handed out.

He echoed that sentiment again Wednesday.
