We hope that it will continue.'' Officials hope to collect about 17,000 trees between now and Jan. 14, when the city stops receiving trees. City officials estimate that some two-thirds of Glendale residents recycled their trees last year. ``We always want to do more than the previous year, but 17,000 is good,'' Hartwell said. ``I'd be happy if we matched that.'' Residents can either drop off their tree or place it on their curb on trash day. The city requires that all ornaments, decorations, nails and stands be removed. In Burbank, the Christmas Tree Recycling Program begins Monday, Jan. 3, and runs through Friday, Jan. 14. Last year, more than 80 tons of Christmas trees from Burbank residents were composted. Burbank residents have a number of options for recycling their trees. Trees can be dropped off at either of two locations, or cut up and placed in green waste containers. Curbside pickup of trees will also be available on regular trash-collection days. The drop-off lots are located in Brace Canyon Park off Haven Way and on the south side of Verdugo Park. Los Angeles has set up 12 locations for recycling that will open next week. ``We try to encourage citizens to recycle the trees as opposed to just tossing them out,'' said Cora Fossett, spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Department of Public Works, Bureau of Sanitation. Recycled trees can make fertilizer and free up landfill space, Fossett said. Last year, some 150,000 Christmas trees were recycled, she said. Officials predict even more trees will be recycled this year. ``Every year, we go higher and higher,'' Fossett said. ``In Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, , we're into recycling.'' Los Angeles residents can either cut up their trees and put them in their green recycling bins or carry them to a center. The city of Los Angeles
