IT'S OFF TO WORK WE GO; STUDENTS ``SHADOW'' MENTORS.

Byline: Sherry Joe Crosby Daily News Staff Writer

At 17, Candace Schimpf doesn't know what career she wants to pursue, but she knows she likes the casual camaraderie she saw Tuesday between television animators at Walt Disney Studios The name Walt Disney Studios may refer to:
  • The Walt Disney Company, especially its Studio Entertainment unit, which includes Disney's motion picture studios, music labels, theatrical production company, and distribution companies.
 in Burbank.

``I like the kick-back atmosphere,'' the Crescenta Valley High School Crescenta Valley High School is an secondary school located at 2900 Community Avenue in La Crescenta-Montrose, an unincorporated community in Los Angeles County, California, United States. There, she saw hip, young professionals with body piercings working on shows including ``Recess,'' a popular Saturday morning cartoon Saturday morning cartoon is the colloquial term for the animated television programming which was typically scheduled on Saturday mornings on the major American television networks from the 1960s to the 1990s.  show on ABC ABC

.

Her visit to the famous studio was all part of Groundhog Job Shadow Day, during which students got to ``shadow'' working professionals. The purpose is to help show them the ties between school and careers and to introduce them to the requirements of different professions and industries.

Nationwide last year, more than 125,000 students participated in the event. This year, the coalition hoped to attract about 500,000 students.

In Burbank alone, about 80 students took part in the daylong event. Besides Walt Disney Studios, students visited Nickelodeon, Burbank Airport and Warner Bros BROS Brothers

BROS Barnes and Richmond Operatic Society (London, UK)
. Studios among other sites.

Schimpf was one of nearly 40 high school and college students from Burbank, Glendale and La Canada Flintridge to visit the Burbank studio.

``We're allowing them to see the importance and relevance of their education to careers,'' said Sue Boegh, director of career education and public information for the Burbank Unified School District A unified school district is a school district which includes both primary school (kindergarten through middle school or junior high) and high school (grades 9-12). In Illinois, these districts are called unit school districts. .``They're going to see a whole variety of careers at these venues and see careers they can't even imagine.''

At Disney, students enjoyed breakfast and a tour of the facility before pairing off with their respective mentors for the afternoon. Thomas Connolly Thomas Connolly can refer to:
  • Tom Connolly (1870-1961), an English-born American baseball umpire
  • Thomas Arthur Connolly (1899-1991), first Archbishop of Seattle (1951-1975)
  • Thomas F.
, a La Canada High School junior who wants to be a graphic artist, said the event gave him a taste of the real world.

``I want to get the basics of what goes on in different fields,'' said Connolly, who shadowed Jeff Hoffman, director of employee services and corporate volunteerism for Disney. ``I just want to get the feel of a company and what they do on a daily basis.''

Schimpf said touring Disney's TV animation department helped her realize what kind of work environment she would enjoy - one where she can set her own pace.

``I can get the work done, but just don't tell me how or when to do it,'' she said.

Employees also benefited from the job shadowing day.

``I like showing people what I do,'' said Eric Keyes Eric Keyes (born April 8, 1969 in Houston, Texas) is a guitarist and singer based in Denton, TX. He is well known as a performer as well as for his proficiency on guitar. In 1995 after graduating from the University of North Texas he founded the electric rock band , art director for ``Recess,'' part of Disney's Saturday morning lineup. ``I have a fun job and I'm very fortunate to be doing what I'm doing.''

Heidi Hudson, international marketing manager for the Hollywood Records label, said she enjoys giving back to her community.

``I like to volunteer,'' said Hudson, who mentored Mark Reyna, 17, a John Burroughs High School John Burroughs High School is a public high school located in Burbank, California.
