IT'S NOT THE BEST JUMP START HOLMES FALTERED ONCE, BUT WATCH OUT NOW.

Byline: Kirby Lee Special to the Daily News

Jerrick Holmes was ready to soar in the high jump in the Southern Section Division I preliminaries at Long Beach City College last Friday. Instead, he finished last.

The Palmdale High senior and state leader at 7 feet, hopes to redeem himself at the Division I finals at Cerritos College Cerritos College is a public comprehensive community college founded in 1955 located in Norwalk, California. It was named after Rancho Los Cerritos, a ranch that served prominently in the region in the 19th century.  on Saturday.

Holmes entered the prelims as one of the favorites with a best of 6-10. But his best jump was 6-0, and he finished ninth. Holmes attributed the poor showing to a lack of a well-worn plastic spike heel.

``I've been thinking about it all season long, but I am really not worried,'' Holmes said. ``All the people who knew asked what happened. I want to come back and take the high jump. Anything can happen. I'll take it as it comes.''

It promises to be a hectic meet for Holmes, who also will compete in the 400 relay - with Jamil Smith, Terry Furlow and Travis Morse - and the 400 meters. It is likely that he might have to scramble to the running events with the high jump in progress.

Holmes cleared 7-0 in the Northridge-Alemany Relays at Cal State Northridge but has not equaled the mark since. He jumped 6-10 in the Pasadena Games the following week and at the Arcadia Invitational on April 8.

In the preliminaries, Holmes and Camarillo's Chadd Smith were among five jumpers to lead the qualifying at 6-5. After the qualifying was completed, Holmes declined an opportunity to take a shot at the Division I record of 7-2 1/4 - set by Camarillo's Jeremy Fischer in 1994 - so he could rest for his other events.

``I wish I could have kept on going,'' Holmes said. ``With all the other stuff, there was no point in going on.''

``I am almost at 100 percent,'' Pedersen said. ``I think pretty much my physical strength is there, but my mentality and confidence has varied.''

--Fast forward: The region will be well represented in the Division II sprints led by Hart sophomore Tim Gregory and Westlake senior Paul Yun, who have qualified in both the 100 and 200.

Simi Valley's Calvin Bell has also qualified for the 100, and teammate Kareem Lacy is in the 200 and 400.

--Going the distance: Canyon senior Aaron Hope advanced to the Division II final for the second year in a row and will be joined by sophomore teammates Luke Llamas and Jameson Mora MORA, In civil law.
