IT'S NO USE CRYING OVER SPILT MILK, BUT . . .Byline: DENNIS McCARTHY Dennis McCarthy may refer to:
The baseball season is mercifully over for the ``Boys of Baywatch.'' The Atlanta Braves The Atlanta Braves are a professional baseball team based in Atlanta, Georgia. How the mighty Dodgers rolled over at the end of the season and in the playoffs faster than my dog when he wants his belly scratched. How they played like they had a plane to catch, a girl to see, a cold beer sitting on a bar somewhere. How they folded, choked, and gave up. Yeah, I know, it's no use crying over spilt spilt v. My kid's not bitter about the way the Dodgers folded in the stretch because he's got no ``when'' to remember. Me, I've got 50 years of the stuff. Dangerous thing, remembering when. Especially when you're sitting in the Dodger Stadium • • [ parking lot Thursday night after another choke job, stuck in traffic for nearly two hours because the brain trusts who built the place didn't put in enough exits. You'd think the TV announcers who rap Dodger fans would have it figured out by now. People leave Dodger Stadium early because they don't want to sit in the parking lot until midnight, not because they want a cafe latte ca`fe´ lat´te n. 1. When one was stupid enough to try, the Barber would give him a shave - a real close shave. Today, Dodger pitchers live life dangerously on the outside corner. Remembering when Campy would block home plate, daring the runner rounding third to make it home. Campy caused more migraines than a good divorce lawyer. Remembering when Jackie would come out of a slide ready to knock the shortstop's head off for coming down extra hard on the tag because he didn't like the color of Jackie's skin. How Jackie would make 'em pay with his bat. Remembering a quiet, humble man named Furillo who carried a rifle for an arm out in right for the Dodgers. How one night when his career was long over, and he was working the midnight shift as a security guard at a factory, we talked about how it was. How most of the players hung out together after the games, and how many of them rode the subway to the games, sitting right next to the fans who would be cheering them on in a few hours. How the money wasn't much, but it was enough to live comfortably. How they all just felt lucky to put on the uniform every day, and go to work playing a kid's game. How, win or lose, they never held anything back. Even when you beat them, you knew you were just in one hell of a fight. How the Boys of Summer played the game like a squad of Marines storming the beach. Somehow, I don't think the Boys of Baywatch are playing the same game.
