IT'S JUST THE (TV) NEWS.

In the upcoming Fox sitcom "Back to You," Patricia Heaton and Kelsey Grammer play local news anchors at a Pittsburgh TV station. The show promises to have fun with the notion that the phrase "TV news" can be a misnomer misnomer n. the wrong name.

MISNOMER. The act of using a wrong name.
     2. Misnomers, may be considered with regard to contracts, to devises and bequests, and to suits or actions.

"Based upon my knowledge of most television newscasting now, it has nothing do with the news anyway," Grammer joked while addressing those attending the TV critics press tour in Beverly Hills. "So I'm very happy to just be another performer pretending to be a performer."

Grammer contrasted his new character -- described as an "aging Lothario" -- to Frasier Crane. "Frasier was trying to be a psychiatrist who happened to be on the air," he said.

"Although Frasier was equally self-obsessed, he was trying to do the world some good. This fellow is trying to do himself some good, and I think what makes him funny is that he has a kind of arrogance and a comfort in his own ego."

Series creator Steve Levitan offered an anecdote that occurred during a TV newscast in Wisconsin that'll serve as an inspiration for the series.

"The night that John Lennon was shot, it was very sad -- they went to footage around the Dakota and people crying," Levitan recalled. "It was a very big moment for (the local news anchor). They came back to him, and he went, very dramatically, 'Lennon is survived by his wife, Topo Gigio.' "That has always stayed with me," Levitan continued. "What's so funny, to me, about local news is there's this great narcissism narcissism (närsĭs`ĭzəm), Freudian term, drawn from the Greek myth of Narcissus, indicating an exclusive self-absorption. In psychoanalysis, narcissism is considered a normal stage in the development of children.  pretending to be altruism."

Heaton, likewise, is amused by TV news.

"I love the hairdos and seeing the different markets. You got your local New York anchors, the gals who really could use a little wax on the brow. You get all the way to the West Coast, you know, some of them look like hookers."

"It doesn't serve the devil to be evil, to come at you with horns and a pitchfork," said co-creator Michele Fazekas. "We looked high and low for the right devil, I have to say," adds executive producer Deborah Spera. "And Ray walked in and smiled at us, and that was it." On cue, Wise -- perhaps best remembered as Leland Palmer on "Twin Peaks" -- produced an oily, unnervingly charming smile. Wise then told assembled TV critics, "I just think the devil finds all of you very amusing."
