IT'S CROWDED AT THE TOP OF GRAMMY LIST.Byline: Fred Shuster Music Writer If you released a record last year, Grammy has a cookie for you. Or in the case of Bruce Springsteen, Norah Jones and six other front-runners, a whole plate of cookies. It's Grammy Awards nomination time, which means the troubled record industry's big night out is approaching. This year, the academy once again reflected a dwindling appreciation for kid stuff by giving nods in the major categories to older artists and mainstreamers with across-the-board appeal. Leading the sprawling list of trophy hunters, with nominations in the high-profile categories of record, song and album of the year, were Eminem, brat-rocker Avril Lavigne, newcomer Jones and the perennial Springsteen. R&b thrush Ashanti, St. Louis rapper Nelly, crooner Raphael Saadiq and longtime Grammy favorite Sheryl Crow also received five nods each, enlarging the field of 2003's top contenders to eight. While the Grammy nominations, which this year grew to a mind-numbing 104 categories, make everyone involved feel good, the cheers can end in tears End in Tears is a novel by Ruth Rendell. It features her popular character Chief Inspector Reg Wexford, and is the 20th novel in the series. In 2007 it was longlisted for the Theakston's Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year Award, the only such award voted for solely by the public. when the golden gramophones are handed out. Last year, for example, U2 led with eight nods but won just half that many awards. India.Arie fared worse, leaving the 2002 ceremony with nothing to show for seven nominations. In the end, the spotlight shined on Alicia Keys, U2 and, unexpectedly, the ``O Brother, Where Art Thou?'' soundtrack. The 45th annual gala Feb. 23 at New York's Madison Square Garden Current arenas in the National Hockey League Western Conference Eastern Conference will reflect a tough year for an industry where sales plunged 10 percent and the academy itself faced internal problems. Michael Greene, longtime president of the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (NARAS NARAS National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (Grammy awards) NARAS Navigation Aids, Radar and ARPA Simulation (UK maritime course) ) and generally known for an awards show tradition - the midshow state-of-the-industry speech - resigned under a black cloud and was replaced by former label executive Neil Portnow. If anything, Tuesday's largely unsurprising nominations reflected the most mainstream pop currents. Springsteen's Sept. 11-themed ``The Rising'' predictably earned strong support along with the year's biggest seller, Eminem's ``The Eminem Show.'' Also raking in votes were coffeehouse songbird songbird Any oscine passerine (suborder Passere), all of which have a complex vocal organ, the syrinx. Some species (e.g., thrushes) produce melodious songs; others (e.g., crows) have a harsh voice; and some do little or no singing. See also birdsong. Jones, 23, teen cover girl Lavigne and the ubiquitous Crow. The continued popularity of hip-hop's melodic side was expressed in multiple nods for Ashanti, Nelly and Saadiq. Meanwhile, in Nashville, the Dixie Chicks are up for four awards, including country album of the year, where the chirpy chirp·y n. 1. Characterized by chirping tones: a bird with a chirpy song. 2. Tending to chirp: a chirpy parakeet. 3. trio vies with Alan Jackson. The white-hatted singer's Sept. 11 ode, ``Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning),'' was also nominated for song of the year. Other multiple Grammy nominees included India.Arie, Elvis Costello, Johnny Cash and Vanessa Carlton, whose radio fave fave Informal n. One that is preferred above others or likely to win; a favorite. adj. Favorite. [Short for favorite.] ``A Thousand Miles'' was nominated for record and song of the year. Additionally, Springsteen, David Bowie, Costello, Peter Gabriel and Robert Plant, all rock veterans over 40, conquered the male rock vocal category. On the flip side Flip side In the context of general equities, opposite side to a proposition or position (buy, if sell is the proposition and vice versa). , young female acts dominated the new artist list (which Keys won last year) with votes for Ashanti, Michelle Branch, Jones and Lavigne, plus good-natured singer-songwriter John Mayer. The eligibility period eligibility period Health insurance The time following the eligibility date–usually 31 days–during which a member of a group may apply for insurance without evidence of insurability covers albums and singles released from Oct. 1, 2001, to Sept. 30, 2002 - which means recent top sellers from Santana, J.Lo, Mariah Carey and Shania Twain won't be eligible until next year. One mild surprise was the lack of academy support for the much-hyped new-garage sound of upstarts like the White Stripes, but while these groups may photograph well and generate reams of press, perhaps their material just isn't up to snuff in the final analysis. Not that it's stopped anyone from winning Grammys before. Before too many nostrils flare, Grammy did get some things right. In the jazz instrumental category, fine records such as ``Directions in Music'' by Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker and Roy Hargrove, and ``Footprints Live!'' by Wayne Shorter drew votes, as did a John Coltrane tribute by his longtime pianist, McCoy Tyner. The Motown session band collectively known as the Funk Brothers snagged two nominations in a year when the group finally emerged from general obscurity. The veteran musicians received nods for traditional r&b performance and best soundtrack for the acclaimed documentary ``Standing in the Shadows of Motown.'' Equally deserving names also dotted the Grammy landscape: songwriter Randy Newman, jazz legend Charlie Christian, opera diva Renee Fleming, film-TV composer Thomas Newman, African reggae singer Alpha Blondy and violinist Hilary Hahn among them. And just weeks after the death of Joe Strummer, the politicized leader of the Grammy-snubbed Clash, a documentary about the group called ``Westway to the World'' went up for an award. 2003 GRAMMY AWARD NOMINEES Complete list of nominees in 104 categories announced Tuesday for the 45th annual Grammy Awards, to be presented Feb. 23 in New York New York, state, United States New York, Middle Atlantic state of the United States.
