Officials at Castaic Lake Castaic Lake is a lake on Castaic Creek formed by Castaic Dam, in northwestern Los Angeles County, California, near the town of Castaic. The 323,700 acre foot lake (399,000,000 m³) is the terminus of the West Branch of the California Aqueduct, though some comes from the 154 mi²  Recreation Area are gearing up for the annual American Bass Association winter tournament Saturday, as 60 two-person teams will compete for as much as $2,000 for the top prize.

``At this time of year it's a little harder to find fish, so there's a lot of strategy involved, but it's great. It's awesome,'' said Craig Sutherland, editor of American Bass Fishing News. ``We do expect a pretty good bite for the winter.''

The entry fee is $100, and teams can sign up at the Castaic minimart through Saturday morning.

The contest rules call for a five-fish limit, and the heaviest combined weight wins. Cash awards are based on the number of entries, and about 25 percent of the field win money. Lines are dropped at dawn, and the tournament ends about 3 p.m.

Sutherland said the key to success Saturday is finding the fish that school in deep water.

``The bait has to be artificial, but you need to find where the fish are feeding,'' he said.

    --Softball tourney set: The fourth-annual Adult New Year's Softball Tournament (16-over) on Sunday at Castaic Regional Sports Complex has openings for four teams. The cost is $150 through Wednesday, $175 after.

    Teams compete for prizes based on the total number of teams, usually athletic equipment such as bags or bats.

    ``We found awarded equipment is better than trophies,'' the tournament's Jared Didier said. ``The tournament competition usually isn't that serious. Most players are `B' or `C' level.''

    All teams also must pay $10 a game for the umpire fee, and each team plays at least three games.

    --Add Castaic Recreation: Registration continues for the spring T- ball/softball season, which will begin in March. A coaches meeting is planned for Saturday, and players report on Jan. 18.

    The league is open to boys and girls ages 4-12. The fee is $60, which covers 10 games, trophies, uniforms and pictures.
