ISRAEL - March 4 - Sharon-Peres Contradictions.
As Sharon enlarges his cabinet line-up to include the 17-seat
ultra-orthodox Shas party and right-wing radicals like Yisrael
Beitenu's Avigdor Lieberman - with the 5-seat National Religious
Party saying it will not join but will support it - contradictions with
incoming FM Peres appear. As a Palestinian suicide bomber kills himself
and 3 Israelis in Netanya (see Arabs-Israel), Peres tells the radio:
"They (Palestinians) are a bone in our throat and we are a bone in
theirs". He calls for new moves to restore security co-operation
with the PA and "help them out of their situation of hunger,
unemployment and hate". But Sharon insists Israel will not resume
peace talks with the PA until it stops the uprising. Yet Peres says:
"I don't believe that Sharon and his government are interested
in living with terror, rage, hate and blood. We all have to find a
solution". (Lieberman, who gets a portfolio for having helped
Sharon with Russian Jews, has said: "If they want terror and war,
we'll give them terror and war... They must understand we're
willing to pay any cost to provide security". He has urged a
re-invasion of the PA territories and has called Israeli Arab MPs a
"terror department" and has told Mohammed Barakei: "In a
Communist country they would've put you in front of a firing
squad").
