ISRAEL - Dec. 29 - Poland To Get Missiles.


Poland Poland, Pol. Polska, officially Republic of Poland, republic (2005 est. pop. 38,635,000), 120,725 sq mi (312,677 sq km), central Europe. It borders on Germany in the west, on the Baltic Sea and the Kaliningrad region of Russia in the north, on Lithuania,  and Israel sign $350m deal to buy 2,700 state-of-the-art Israeli anti-tank Spike missiles. To be delivered between 2004 and 2013, they will be produced under licence from the state-owned Israeli Rafael arms corporation by Mesko, a Polish company. Mesko will use components from Rafael, which will supply an initial batch of Israeli-made missiles in 2004. (The Spike is optically guided, can be shoulder-fired or mounted on vehicles or helicopters and has a range of 4,000 metres. It will replace the Soviet-era missiles still in use by the Polish military - part of a wider effort to bring the country's armed forces up to the standards of NATO NATO: see North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

, which Poland joined in 1999. The contract will give Mesko financial breathing room after a decade of losses. Its value for the first two years of the contract is estimated at $35m. Poland's Defence Ministry says the deal is the third largest involving modernisation of the country's armed forces since the end of Communism communism, fundamentally, a system of social organization in which property (especially real property and the means of production) is held in common. Thus, the ejido system of the indigenous people of Mexico and the property-and-work system of the Inca were both  in 1989. In June, Defense News, a US weekly specialising in military issues, ranked Israel third in defence exports, behind the US and Russia.
