ISRAEL'S NATIONAL AIRLINE BEGINS SERVICE FROM BALTIMORE/WASHINGTON
 INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT THIS JUNE
NEW YORK, March 19 /PRNewswire/ -- El Al Israel Airlines announced the start up of weekly service between the Greater Washington/Baltimore area and Tel Aviv. Beginning June 22, El Al flights will depart twice weekly, every Monday and Wednesday, from Baltimore/Washington International Airport (BWI). This is El Al's sixth gateway city in the United States.
"We have been a tremendous surge in travel to Israel from the Greater Washington/Baltimore area," said Leon Hasdai, vice president, general manager, El Al Airlines. "This new service is yet another step is El AI's continuing growth in the U.S. In the past year we increased the number of flights from every existing gateway. In addition, we plan to start up service from Dallas this October, and we hope by the fall of 1993 to be flying from Atlanta and San Francisco as well."
El AI's new service from Baltimore/Washington International Airport will greatly minimize passenger travel time, because the long layovers in Europe and at New York's JFK International Airport will be eliminated. "We are pleased to offer the fastest, most convenient service for our passengers in this important region," said Arieh Abend, El AI's regional manager for the Baltimore/Washington area.
At BWI, travelers clear El AI's security, check-in, and receive their seat assignment and boarding card for the entire flight to Israel. Service from BWI will be provided via a feeder flight to JFK, where passengers will immediately board the nonstop El Al 747 to Israel by simply walking from one gate to another one nearby.
"El Al's new gateway through Baltimore/Washington International Airport will be the catalyst for implementing the Declaration of Cooperation between Maryland and Israel which we signed in May 1988," said Gov. William Donald Schaefer. The agreement calls for broad cooperation in trade, tourism, science and technology, communications, agriculture and transportation.
Feeder service to New York is provided by North American Airlines (NAA), which is partially owned by El Al. Passengers will fly from BWI to JFK on state-of-the-art equipment with the option of flying business or economy class. NAA serves as an extension of El Al, with El Al providing check-in, security, Kosher catering and a Hebrew speaking flight attendant to ensure passenger comfort. In fact, passengers receive virtually all the same services and amenities as with any El Al flight. Service to Tel Aviv will be on El Al flight 208, and the return trip will be on El Al flight 207.
El Al's five other gateway cities are Boston, Chicago, Miami, Los Angeles and New York. This summer, El Al will offer the most flights between the U.S. and Israel in its history; 18 weekly flights from New York (15 nonstop); four weekly flights from Los Angeles; three weekly flights from Miami; and two weekly flights from Baltimore/Washington, Boston and Chicago.
