ISPs Now Blocking 18.7 Percent of Opt-in E-Mail, Believing It to Be Spam.

Delivery of permission-based e-mail has steadily become a more severe problem, as the ongoing analysis shows. "This trend is bound to continue for at least another year," said George Bilbrey, general manager of deliverability services for Return Path. "As more and more companies start monitoring key delivery metrics for their own e-mail initiatives, and acting swiftly to ensure compliance with the appropriate range of best practices, the rates of non-delivery should start to decline."

Return Path's analysis shows that NetZero blocked 37.7 percent of permission-based e-mail, followed by SBC (1) (SBC Communications Inc., San Antonio, TX, www.sbc.com) A large, national telecommunications company that grew from a multitude of local and regional companies, including Southwestern Bell, Pacific Bell and Nevada Bell, into a single, unified brand by 2002.  Global/Yahoo! with 26.7 percent and Mac with 26.2 percent. Earthlink had the highest success rate, with only 7 percent of legitimate e-mail being blocked.

The biggest negative shift in ISP delivery performance fell to Yahoo!, largely due to an increase in bulk-mail folder inclusion. Mail.com saw delivery performance increase the most, with a nearly 12 percent gain. BellSouth and AT&T Worldnet followed closely behind with 8 percent and 10.2 percent growth, respectively.

"While this study only shows one part of the story, it does demonstrate the need for vigilance and best practices on the part of companies sending e-mail," said Bilbrey. "The complexity of the anti-spam battle, the dynamic nature of blacklisting practices, the growing influence of consumer complaints, and the desire by ISPs to reduce the amount of spam hitting inboxes means that companies sending commercial e-mail must continue to watch delivery closely."
