``Planting trees is a great way to put down your roots and show a strong commitment to improving your community,'' Hahn said during the ceremony sponsored by the Department of Water and Power on an island strip at Haynes and Kittridge streets.

``This is a great way to cool our neighborhoods, reduce power costs and improve air quality.''

Part of the department's Trees for a Green L.A. program, the effort is expected to cost $8 million over two years. Department officials said shade trees can reduce air-conditioning costs by as much as 50 percent in a neighborhood.

Sepulveda Boulevard was selected for median trees because it is the longest street in the city and runs from Mission Hills to Harbor City, crossing Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. , officials said.

The Trees for a Green L.A. program began in February with a goal of planting more than 200,000 trees around the city. Residents willing to plant and care for them can get up to seven trees in 40 varieties.

Hahn said he wants to expand the program to include businesses.
