or basic rituals, of Islam,'' said Imam Qazi Fazullah, the spiritual leader of the Islamic Center of Northridge. ``The four other duties are the expression of oneness of Allah, prayer five times a day, charity and pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca.''

The word Ramadan is derived from the Arabic word ``ramz'' which is loosely translated as ``to burn.'' Fazullah said Ramadan Said Ramadan (died 1995) was the son-in-law of Hassan al-Banna, founder of the Egyptian Islamist organization the Muslim Brotherhood. Said Ramadan was a major figure in that organization and was expelled from Egypt by Gamal Abdul Nasser for his activities.  can also be called the ``month of forgiveness.''

Every adult Muslim, and many children, will observe the fast, which is broken every evening after sundown throughout the month. Muslims go to work and to school during Ramadan.

Ramadan ends in about 29 to 30 days, depending upon the sighting of the next new moon. The holiday of Eid ul-Fitr Eid ul-Fitr or Id-Ul-Fitr (Arabic: عيد الفطر ‘Īdu l-Fiṭr), often abbreviated to Eid, is a Muslim holiday that marks the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting. , known as the feast of fast breaking, will be celebrated when the month ends with family get-togethers and gift giving.

``This month gives every Muslim a feeling that the rest of the world doesn't have food. This is an important part of our fasting, that we feel how those people feel in those situations. The (Koran) was sent to us during this month and that is another importance that we are thankful for,'' said Ares Abedi, director of the Islamic Center of Reseda.

Fazullah said the Koran, or Quran, is divided into portions that are recited in Arabic each evening during the month of Ramadan in mosques A list of notable mosques around the world: Asia
