ISC2(R) Honors William Hugh Murray with 2006 Harold F. Tipton Award.


Award Recognizes Lifetime of Achievement and Contribution to Information Security Profession

SAN FRANCISCO -- (ISC (1) (Internet Systems Consortium, Redwood City, CA www.isc.org) An organization founded by Paul Vixie, Carl Malamud and Rick Adams in 1994 and later sponsored by UUNET and other Internet companies. )2[R]("ISC-squared"), the non-profit global leader in educating and certifying information security professionals throughout their careers, today announced executive consultant and veteran lecturer William "Bill" Murray, CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional) The award for successful completion of an examination in computer security administered by the International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium (ISC)2. , as the recipient of the 2006 Harold F. Tipton Award in recognition of his distinguished information security career.

The annual award was presented last evening at the RSA Conference 2007 in San Francisco. Murray has more than 50 years of experience in information technology and more than 40 years in security, including 25 years with IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  developing access control programs, advising customers on security, and articulating the IBM security product plan. He is also the author of the IBM publication Information System Security Controls and Procedures.

A pioneer in computer security and a co-founder and longtime board member of (ISC)2, Murray has made significant contributions to the literature and practice of information security and is a popular speaker on such topics as network security architecture, encryption, PKI (Public Key Infrastructure) A framework for creating a secure method for exchanging information based on public key cryptography. The foundation of a PKI is the certificate authority (CA), which issues digital certificates that authenticate the identity of  and Secure Electronic Commerce. He is a founding member of the International Committee to establish the "Generally Accepted System Security Principles," and is a founder and board member of the Colloquium on Information System Security Education. He is also recognized as the founder of the systems audit field.

Previous recognitions bestowed upon Murray include the Fitzgerald Memorial Award for leadership in data security in 1987, the Joseph J. Wasserman Award for contributions to security, audit and control in 1989, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Computer Security Institute in 1995, and enrollment in the ISSA (Information Systems Security Association, Bellingham, WA, www.issa.org) A membership organization that promotes effective management practices for computer security. Founded in 1982, ISSA has chapters in more than 20 countries and hosts an annual conference.  Hall of Fame in 1999 in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the information security community.

The annual (ISC)2 Harold F. Tipton Award recognizes an individual's life-long contributions to the improvement of the information security field and profession. The award's namesake is a security industry pioneer and (ISC)2 co-founder and Certified Information Systems Security Professional Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) is a vendor-neutral certification governed by the non-profit International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium (commonly known as (ISC)²).  (CISSP([R])) education director.

Murray currently serves as chief technology officer for Cybertrust, a global leader in managed security services. He is also a professor at the Naval Postgraduate School The Naval Postgraduate School is a graduate school operated by the United States Navy. Located in Monterey, California, it grants primarily master's degrees plus some doctoral degrees to its students, who are mostly active duty officers from U.S. and foreign military services.  in Monterey, Calif.
