IRWINDALE SPEEDWAY: KANKE'S FORTUNES CHANGE FOR THE BETTER.

Byline: Tim Haddock Staff Writer

IRWINDALE - M.K. Kanke said he needed a change of luck before the NASCAR NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing), organization that sanctions American stock-car races, est. 1948. It held its first race in Daytona Beach, Fla.  Elite Division, Southwest Series race at Irwindale Speedway on Saturday night.

Boy did his luck ever change.

Kanke led every lap but one in the Stock Building Supply 150 and won his first race of the year.

The driver from Frazier Park saw his fortunes change for the better when he found himself starting on the front row after posting the ninth-fastest qualifying time for the race.

That put Dan Holtz of Pacific Palisades Palisades, cliffs along the west bank of the Hudson River, NE N.J. and SE N.Y., extending from N of Jersey City, N.J., to the vicinity of Piermont, N.Y., with a general altitude of from 350 ft to 550 ft (107–168 m). , who posted the 10th-fastest time in qualifying, in the pole position. Kanke, who had the ninth-fastest qualifying time, was second and on the front row, next to Holtz.

Despite his lackluster qualifying time, Kanke said he was confident his car would perform come race time.

``The car's been good all day,'' Kanke said. ``It's been consistently fast.''

``I've needed some luck for the last five races,'' said Kanke, a Kennedy High graduate. ``I needed a good run tonight.''

His bad luck started in June during the first Southwest Series race at Irwindale Speedway. He broke a carburetor in that race. A broken transmission followed at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma. Then a broken motor at Pikes Peak International Raceway Pikes Peak International Raceway was a one mile oval Auto Racing track located in Fountain, Colorado, south of Colorado Springs and north of Pueblo. Through it all, Kanke managed to stay in the top 10 in points and remain eligible for the Toyota All-Star Showdown The Toyota All-Star Showdown is a nonpoints, all-star race that brings together the top drivers in NASCAR's lower-level series.

 at Irwindale Speedway in November.

The top 10 drivers in the Southwest Series will be entered in the All-Star Showdown, which pits the top drivers from the four Elite Divisions across the country.
