IRWINDALE SPEEDWAY: THREE OF A KIND AT FINISH.
IRWINDALE - Covina's Jimmy White won the six-lap NASCAR Grand American Trophy Dash in a thrilling finish at Irwindale Speedway on Saturday night.
White hung on to beat Dean Kuhn and red-hot Rip Michaels as the drivers went three across as they crossed the finish line. White beat Kuhn by .048 of a second and Michaels, who had won five straight main events entering Saturday, by .11 of a second. Both White and Kuhn held off Michaels, whose slick and aggressive inside move on both on the final turn nearly pulled out the dash for him.
Lakewood's J.J. Ercse, who shines on this track, won the 20-lap NASCAR TQ main event in easy fashion. Ercse took the lead on the second lap and never was challenged during the first of five main-event races.
Lakeside's Eddie Secord won the 35-lap NASCAR MSRA main event by holding off Glendora's Bob Fulmer. Driver Rick Minyard smacked the wall hard in turn 2 on the 11th lap and his car came to rest in the backstretch. Minyard was checked out at the scene by on-site paramedics, and he was uninjured in the wreck. The car suffered extensive damage to the passenger side.
--Lost and found: Canyon Country's Rod Johnson popped a motor during practice here Friday for Saturday's NASCAR Super Late Model main event.
In his search for a new motor, Johnson found an old one in the Irwindale garage area. He qualified eighth among 22 qualifiers.
