Irwin hasn't hit that milestone yet - he won't start his seventh decade for another three months. And the way he's playing, he looks nowhere close to that age.

He won his second U.S. Open championship when he was 44, sinking a 45-foot putt on the final hole, then celebrating by sprinting around the 18th green at Medinah (Ill.) Country Club, high-fiving everyone within reach.

He'll arrive at Valencia not only with eight majors in 11 seasons on the 50-over tour, but also a tour-record 42 career victories and a tour season- best scoring average of 67.09.

Win No. 2 this season arrived Monday, when Irwin defeated Morris Hatalsky by a stroke in the rain-shortened Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am The Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am is a golf tournament on the Champions Tour. Irwin, who has finished third in his other two senior starts, said afterward he didn't drive the ball well, nor putt well, but that his experience might have helped.

It didn't hurt that his experience includes a combined 62 PGA Tour and senior-tour victories in 37 professional seasons. It probably won't hurt Baby Boomer ticket sales at the SBC Classic, either.

--Youth watch: Simi Valley High is on a serious youth golf boom, one which could have coach Ty McDermott's Pioneers challenging longtime area power Westlake for this year's Marmonte League championship. And that's with Westlake, which possesses a rich history with two Southern California team titles, fielding one of its best teams.

McDermott opened the season welcoming junior golf tournament winner J.D. Archibald to the program. The freshman was good as expected in Monday's opener, shooting a 3-over-par 74 at Simi Hills Golf Course.

Archibald had the second-best score of the match, but it wasn't the day's lowest score by a Simi Valley freshman.

Teammate Chris Duzan launched his prep career with a 73 to lead the Pioneers to a 378 total, the best opening score in the area.

Casey Piper, a Southern Section finalist two years ago as a sophomore, and Tyler Ostrovsky shot 75s for Simi Valley, which won by 13 shots over perennial Marmonte contender Agoura.

The Cougars' victory at Tierra Rejada Golf Club left them tied with Moorpark for the WSC lead with 14-4 records and left COC See chip on chip.  coach Gary Peterson celebrating the conference's growing depth.

``I honestly think it's going to make it easier for our conference in the postseason,'' said Peterson, whose COC men's teams have won three state championships but sometimes struggled after dominating during conference play.

Peterson listed COC, Moorpark, Bakersfield, Ventura and Hancock - winner of the second WSC tournament - as strong postseason contenders.

``It's a different situation now,'' he said.

``It's tougher week to week, and I think that's going to make us a better team.''

Moorpark, which starts three freshmen from the 2004 Thousand Oaks High team that reached the Southern Section team final - Kyle Thurston, Aaron Conrad and Bryan Martin - has received two WSC-medalist efforts from Conrad, who shared low score Monday with two others, including COC's John Minkhoff.
