IRVINE SENSORS CORP. ANNOUNCES NASA CONTRACT
IRVINE SENSORS CORP. ANNOUNCES NASA CONTRACT COSTA MESA, Calif., Oct. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Irvine Sensors Corp.
(NASDAQ: IRSN) announced today the receipt of an approximate $490,000 contract award from NASA to demonstrate the application of its stacked circuitry technology to massively parallel supercomputers. The 13-month contract, which is being managed by Cal-Tech's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, is a Phase 2 award under the Small Business Innovation Research ("SBIR") program.
Under the new contract, Irvine Sensors will mount a stack of memory chips on top of a processor chip. This will result in a complete parallel processor node in a virtually monolithic stacked- silicon structure. This structure will not only be smaller and lighter than alternative packages, it will offer both speed and power advantages because of the very short connection paths between chips. The reduction in boards, interconnects and other packaging elements is also expected to reduce system manufacturing costs. An example of an early anticipated use in which the capacity of an existing parallel processor board is multiplied by replacing existing processors and board-mounted die with the Irvine stacked processing nodes. James Alexiou, Irvine's chief executive officer, said, "Parallel processing supercomputers represent the kind of performance-driven market that can take maximum advantage of our stacking architecture. For such supercomputers, integration of the processing and memory function in a single package is the next logical step beyond our Memory Short Stack. It is also consistent with the goals of our IBM joint manufacturing agreement. This new NASA contact gives us the means to demonstrate that evolution and accelerate our timetable for widespread commercial use of our technology." Irvine Sensors, headquartered in Costa Mesa, is primarily engaged in the development of infrared devices and high-density packages of computer electronics which are intended to have broad applications in military and commercial systems. -0- 10/20/92 /CONTACT: John J.
