IRVINE KICKS CSUN AGAIN SHORT-HANDED MATADORS FALL UCI 4, CSUN 0.Byline: Jack Pollon Special to the Daily News After taking over as Cal State Northridge head coach in 1999, Terry Davila has not had a victory over UC Irvine in four tries. It was no different Sunday night at CSUN's North Campus Stadium as the Anteaters anteater, name applied to various animals that feed on ants, termites, and other insects, but more properly restricted to a completely toothless group of the order Edentata. There are four species classified in three genera, all found in tropical Central and South America. The great anteater, or ant bear (Myrmecophaga), has an elongated, almost cylindrical head and snout, a long sticky tongue, a coarse-haired body about 4 ft (1. won 4-0 over the Matadors in a Big West Conference game. Only 36 seconds into the match, UC Irvine's Anthony Vizcarra headed in a corner kick from Saul Wolf to jump start the Anteaters on a chilly and wet night. At 24:37 of the first half, Brad Asprey scored an unassisted goal from 18 yards, beating Matadors goalie Chris Clemens from the left side. UCI scored twice in the final 15 minutes of the second half to put the game out of reach. Asprey connected again at 77:33, and Jon Spencer scored at 82:36 for UCI. ``Not having Josh Barton and Brian Phillips really hurt us,'' said Davila. ``It hurt our organization and confidence. They took advantage of us and they got all the breaks.'' After winning eight of their first 12 games, CSUN (9-6-2, 4-4-1) has lost three of its last four matches, likely ending its chances for an at-large berth to the NCAA tournament. CSUN plays at San Diego Thursday and concludes the regular season Sunday at home against UC Riverside. |
