Production of NR is expected to increase 1.4% to 6.6 mmt after declining 2.2% in 2000. SR production is projected to be near 10.7 mmt, a 1.7% increase over 2000. Total production is forecast to be at 17.1 mmt, a 1.6% increase over the previous year.

The IRSG says that long term demand for elastomers is expected to continue at a steady pace. While synthetic rubber output will be able to cope with the forecast increase in demand, a shortage is foreseen in the world natural rubber market.
