The IRSG IRSG - Internet Research Steering Group sees consumption of rubber totalling 18.6 million metric tons (Transparent Optical Networking Services) A marketing term for providing dark fiber to a customer. Rubber consumption in 2000 was pegged peg n. 1. a. A small cylindrical or tapered pin, as of wood, used to fasten things or plug a hole. b. A similar pin forming a projection that may be used as a support or boundary marker. 2. at 17.8 mmt, which was 6.3% higher than 1999. The IRSG forecasts synthetic rubber synthetic rubber: see rubber. consumption in 2001 will surpass 11.1 mmt and natural rubber consumption will reach 7.5 mmt. Production of NR is expected to increase 1.4% to 6.6 mmt after declining 2.2% in 2000. SR production is projected to be near 10.7 mmt, a 1.7% increase over 2000. Total production is forecast to be at 17.1 mmt, a 1.6% increase over the previous year. The IRSG says that long term demand for elastomers is expected to continue at a steady pace. While synthetic rubber output will be able to cope with the forecast increase in demand, a shortage is foreseen in the world natural rubber market. The top two NR producers, Thailand Thailand (tī`lănd, –lənd), Thai Prathet Thai [land of the free], officially Kingdom of Thailand, constitutional monarchy (2005 est. pop. 65,444,000), 198,455 sq mi (514,000 sq km), Southeast Asia. and Indonesia Indonesia (ĭn'dənē`zhə), officially Republic of Indonesia, republic (2005 est. pop. 241,974,000), c.735,000 sq mi (1,903,650 sq km), SE Asia, in the Malay Archipelago. are expected to only produce slightly more than what they produced in 1999, and number three Malaysia Malaysia (məlā`zhə), independent federation (2005 est. pop. 23,953,000), 128,430 sq mi (332,633 sq km), Southeast Asia.
