IRIS and BMC unveil world's fastest and most accurate urinalysis system.

MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 29, 1995--International Remote Imaging Systems Inc. (IRIS) and Boehringer Mannheim Corp. (BMC (BMC Software, Inc., Houston, TX, www.bmc.com) A leading supplier of software that supports and improves the availability, performance, and recovery of applications in complex computing environments. ), jointly unveiled their new collaborative high-capacity urinalysis system, the IRIS/BMC 900/UDx Urine Pathology System, at the Clinical Laboratory Management Association meeting taking place in Minneapolis this week.

The 900/UDx will be the industry's first fully automated walkaway system for performing complete urinalytical profiles including microscopy on every specimen, offering the fastest, most accurate, most cost-effective routine urinalysis possible.

The 900/UDx is the result of an intensive joint development program, announced earlier this year, involving a team of engineers and scientists from both companies. The new system integrates BMC's CHEMSTRIP Super UA Urine Analyzer, Automated Intelligent Microscopy of IRIS flow microscope images in full color on the new high-resolution IRISuperScope View Station, absolute specific gravity specific gravity, ratio of the weight of a given volume of a substance to the weight of an equal volume of some reference substance, or, equivalently, the ratio of the masses of equal volumes of the two substances.  measurement via the IRIS-exclusive harmonic oscillation method and first-time automated true color and clarity determinations. Through its affiliate, Corange International Ltd., Boehringer Mannheim recently increased its holdings in IRIS to 8.3 percent of outstanding IRIS common stock.

IRIS, a Los Angeles-based company, is the recognized leader in automated microscopic urinalysis. Its main product, The Yellow IRIS urinalysis workstation, is used by hospitals in more than 70 percent of U.S. medical schools as well as other leading hospitals nationwide.

The company introduced two new models of The Yellow IRIS at the Clinical Laboratory Exposition held in conjunction with the annual meetings of the American Association of Clinical Chemistry and the American Society of Clinical Laboratory Scientists in Anaheim last month.
