The Foreign Minister since Aug. 12, 1997, Kharrazi is a moderate allied to both Khatami and Rafsanjani. Dr. Mohammed Hadi Nejad Hosseinian, a former heavy industry minister and deputy oil minister, has since taken Kharrazi's post as Iran's ambassador to the UN. Both are now working behind the scenes on the proposed resumption of economic and political relations between Iran and the US.
