IRAN - Gas Imports.


Iran is importing 6-8 BCM/y from Turkmenistan Turkmenistan (trkmyĕ'nyĭstän`), republic (2005 est. pop. 4,952,000), 188,455 sq mi (488,100 sq km), central Asia.  through a pipeline from the Korpedze field to Iran's Kurt Kui town, which went on stream in late 1997. The gas is consumed con·sume

 in northern Iran Northern Iran includes the Southern Caspian regions of Iran, and represents Hyrcania: Gilan and Mazandaran, Gorgan and to some extend Golestan (former East Mazenderan). , where winter demand gets high. Partial expansion of the 40-inch, 195-km pipeline was done in early 2001 with the installation of dehumidifiers.

Now with a 10 BCM/y capacity, this is the first gas pipeline from the Caspian region to bypass Russia. A project to link it to an Iranian export system for huge quantities of gas to reach Europe through Turkey has been suspended sus·pend

, has been getting a part of the supply in payment for having built at the Korpedze field (near the Iranian border) a 26 MCM/d gas processing plant commissioned in March 2001. It was thanks to the completion of this plant that Turkmenistan was able to boost supplies to Iran from the beginning of April 2001 (see Vol. 56, Gas Market Trends No. 15).
