IPST-GT granted $100,000.

IPST-GT GRANTED $100,000. The Institute of Paper Science and Technology at Georgia Tech (IPST-GT), Atlanta, Georgia, USA said that its researcher, Scott Sinquefield, received notification that his proposal to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) will be funded. Sinquefield is examining new techniques for eliminating the energy-intensive lime kiln A lime kiln is a kiln used to produce quicklime by the calcination of limestone (calcium carbonate). The chemical equation for this reaction is:

CaCO3 + heat → CaO + CO2
from the pulping process. The research project will receive approximately US$ 100,000. Jim Frederick, Director of IPST-GT, said grants of this size are not usually big news, but with DOE budget cuts IPT-GT is proud Sinquefield's project was deemed to be of significant value to the industry. Georgia Tech will contribute a 20% cost share to this research project.

The total awarded by DOE in grants is $2.2 million for research and development projects to save energy in the pulp and paper industry The global pulp and paper industry is dominated by North American (United States, Canada), northern European (Finland, Sweden) and East Asian countries (such as Japan). Australasia and Latin America also have significant pulp and paper industries. . The research will focus on removing water from pulp in papermaking and determining the technical and commercial feasibility of next generation manufacturing concepts. Other DOE grants are:

As of the 2005 census estimate, the city had a total population of 70,217. , to design and build a new press technology to reduce the need for energy during paper drying by 30 percent. Voith Paper will contribute a 50% cost share to this research.
