IPC TECHNOLOGIES, INC. SHIPS AUSTIN VISTA NOTEBOOK WITH DESKTOP SYSTEM POWER, PERFORMANCE; The Austin Vista Notebook is the first notebook to offer voice command performance.

) today announced the availability of the Austin Vista Notebook, which is designed to be a desktop replacement. Designed for the power user, the Austin Vista Notebook is ideal for CPU-intensive tasks such as graphics and engineering applications, software development, conducting spreadsheet calculations, programming or database accesses. In addition, the Austin Vista is the first notebook computer A laptop computer that weighs in a range from five to seven pounds. The term originated when laptops were routinely more than 10 pounds, and those that became lighter were placed in a special "notebook" category. In practice, notebook computer and laptop computer are synonymous.  to offer built-in speech recognition technology in the form of voice command operation.

To ensure desktop performance, IPC (1) (InterProcess Communication) The exchange of data between one program and another either within the same computer or over a network. It implies a protocol that guarantees a response to a request.  Technologies added the high-speed IDE hard disk drive controller normally reserved for desktop system models. The IDE-based drive provides 32-bit access at the high-speed transfer rate of 29Mb per second.

The Vista is available with either an Intel 486DX (processor) Intel 486DX - One of Intel's Intel 486 family of microprocessors (one of the last before the Pentium). . Memory configurations are available in 8Mb, 12Mb, 20Mb and 28Mb increments with a 340Mb, 524Mb or 810Mb hard drive. IPC Technologies plans to add 1Gb hard drive capacity to the Vista in late April, and a 1.3Gb hard drive will be available in May.

IPC Technologies has incorporated Cylogic Voice User for Windows into the Austin Vista to let users more easily perform functions in Microsoft Works An integrated software package for Windows and the Macintosh from Microsoft. It provides file management with relational-like capabilities, word processing, spreadsheet, business graphics and communications capabilities in one package.  for Windows, email and scheduling applications, along with basic Windows functions for Cardfile, Program Manager, Write, File Manager, Print Manager, Calendar and others, using a set of 300 voice commands.

Austin Vista's ergonomic design features a palm rest and a built-in micro pointing device. A standard size keyboard includes dedicated function keys and cursor-direction keys.

The notebook comes with a 3.5-inch 1.44Mb floppy disk drive floppy disk drive - disk drive  and either a 10.4-inch Active Matrix or 11.3-inch Dual Scan in 640x480 resolution. A 32-bit local bus Windows Accelerator with 1Mb of Video RAM are featured. In addition, two Type II or one Type III PCMCIA (Personal Computer Memory Card International Association, San Jose, CA, www.pcmcia.org) An international standards body and trade association that was founded in 1989 to establish a standard for connecting peripherals to portable computers. Available Options

IPC Technologies offers a "Road Warrior" package, consisting of a 14.4 Kbps PCMCIA fax/modem card; travel bag; extra battery; external battery charger and car adapter. The cost of this package will run at about $459.

IPC Technologies provides one-year service (parts and labor included) with all its computers through its depot repair program, which re-imburses outbound shipping and handling. Lifetime tech support is also provided 24 hours a day seven days a week through its toll-free hotline, which boasts a four-minute maximum hold time. Up to two years' extension on the warranty may be purchased from Austin at a cost of $175 per year.
