INVESTMENT GROUP ACQUIRES PRAXAIR'S ADVANCED CERAMICS BUSINESS

CLEVELAND, March 8 /PRNewswire/ -- A group of Cleveland investors led by local industrialist Dan T. Moore has acquired the worldwide advanced ceramics business of Praxair Surface Technologies, Inc., for an undisclosed price.
The new company, which will continue to be headquartered here, will be called Advanced Ceramics Corp. and will continue to produce high- purity, customized non-oxide ceramics for the electronics, aerospace, abrasives and advanced materials industries.
Included in the sale are manufacturing facilities at West 117th St. and Madison Ave., Cleveland, as well as related patents and technologies. All 150 employees of the business will be offered employment with Advanced Ceramics. Moore said the investor group also will purchase Praxair's advanced ceramics business in Kozuki, Japan, with the closing expected later this year.
The Cleveland operations include 200,000 square feet of plant on 11 acres. The Japanese facility is 15,000 square feet.
Moore said he saw the acquisition as a "terrific opportunity to capitalize on a company that was held back by its parent firm. With the outstanding management team and the talent of the employees, we intend to find new applications and new markets."
"Our strategy for Advanced Ceramics is one of aggressive growth," said Gerry Weimann, chief financial officer of Dan T. Moore Company. "With its quality-conscious workforce and new product development program, Advanced Ceramics' prospects for continued market leadership are very bright."
Boron nitride ceramics, the company's major products, have several unique properties: better electrical insulating value than glass, heat conductivity greater than many metals, including stainless steel, superior lubricity, and they are non-volatile and stable up to 4500 degrees Fahrenheit.
"This is a unique business that deserves the additional focus and resources Dan T. Moore can bring to it," said Paul J. Bilek, president of Praxair Surface Technologies. "It has been operated as a stand-alone business for some time, so this transaction will have no impact on the rest of Praxair Surface Technologies' business."
Moore is a prominent Cleveland-based industrialist and investor whose current holdings include Soundwich, Inc., which produces polymers to dampen vibrations in engine components for the auto industry, and Flow Polymers, Inc., which produces homogenizing aids and concentrates for the rubber industry. In addition, the Dan T. Moore Co. is involved in manufacturing plastic extrusions and new product development.
Moore is also the principal investor and general partner on a project to develop the largest marina on the Great Lakes in Cleveland on 30 acres of lakefront/riverfront land on Whiskey Island.
Praxair Surface Technologies is a worldwide leader in metal and ceramic coatings used for jet engine parts, and in wear-resistant surfaces for printing, paper and steel finishing rolls. Praxair Surface Technologies is a subsidiary of Praxair, Inc. (NYSE: PX), the leading supplier of industrial gases in North and South America, and one of the largest worldwide. It was formerly known as the Linde Division of Union Carbide Industrial Gases Inc.
