Some ideas pop up to throw in the hopper: Beach vacations have always been a hit, or we could go to Mexico. The children might like heading to the Caribbean, or maybe a horseback trip.

For beach vacations, at least beaches where the water is warm enough to go swimming, Florida hits high on the list.

There is a plethora of sites for Florida, but it is hard to compare rentals, locations and cost. One site, All-Florida Travel, responded by e-mail with a handful of locations.

The state of Florida's tourism site has a wealth of information on tourism's impact, but alas, no way to find a spot at the inn.

If Florida is a bit too close to your children's favorite vacation spot, and you want to do more than look at beaches, check out Mexico's Ministry of Tourism.

A stylish home page leads to an extensive set of pages - available in English or Spanish - with information sliced and diced dozens of ways, making it easy to find something to please the most persnickety traveler, from the beaches of Baja to a museum in Mazatlan. The ministry has done a fine job of organizing and presenting it.

If you are not mesmerized by Mexico and still crazy about the Caribbean, check out the World Wide Travel Exchange's extensive listing of rental properties worldwide.

Thankfully, they include prices. Well, maybe not thankfully. Many include pictures of the property as well as a description of the property and surrounding area.

Beaches not your bag? Check out Preview Vacations ``Find a Trip.'' Most of the getaways offered have some detail on costs, and following the links provides more detail and the ability to book vacations.

For hotels, a good location is the Reed Travel Net, operated by Reed Travel Group, a division of Reed Elsevier PLC. It claims to have about 800 travel-related links as well as the best way to track down hotels on the Web.

If staying in a hotel on vacation is too confining or too expensive, try to find a home to rent.
