INTERMAGNETICS ANNOUNCES NEW LINE OF MRI MAGNETS

GUILDERLAND, N.Y., Nov. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Intermagnetics General (AMEX: IMG) announced today a new line of compact internally shielded magnets for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) aimed at reducing the cost of diagnostic imaging systems. The announcement was made at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) in conjunction with one of IMG's major customers, Philips Medical Systems, who introduced a new MRI product release based on the 1.5 Tesla version of the Intermagnetics magnet. Philips previously incorporated the 0.5 Tesla version of the IMG magnet into its product line in 1988 with its successful GYROSCAN T5 system.
The advanced internally shielded MRI magnet system design eliminates the need for the heavy iron shielding used in many installations and results in a very compact, lightweight magnet that can be readily sited without expensive structural modification of the hospital or clinic. The compact magnet size also reduces the claustrophobic effect experienced by some individuals, making MRI available to a larger population of patients.
The new superconductive magnet design features excellent field uniformity and an advanced cryostat with a cryocooler refrigeration system that limits the consumption of liquid helium to very low levels for minimum operating cost. The cryocooler incorporates reliability improvements that serve to minimize life cycle cost, which will be a key factor for medical diagnostic imaging technologies in the drive to contain health care costs.
Intermagnetics is a leading manufacturer of superconducting magnets, wire and associated low temperature refrigeration equipment, the combination of which is especially useful in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems. The company is dedicated to the development and commercialization of applied superconducting systems and also manufactures permanent magnet systems and material separation equipment.
