INTERIOR MOTIVES LOOKING FOR SOMETHING NEW? OPTIONS ABOUND FOR COLORFUL HOME UPDATES.

Dorothy in the ``Wizard of Oz'' had it right: There is no place like home. It's your castle, your refuge, your space for celebration. Yet you've got that nagging feeling that you need change. Not a new home, but a new look.

You're in luck. A variety of new products and styles to update your home are bursting on the scene, including fresh new colors, great new fabrics and natural materials that can be used almost anywhere to bring a feeling of renewal - and fun - to your home.

Three L.A.-area interior designers gave us their takes on what they think is hot - and what could make you happy - in 2006.

WORLD STYLE

``A lot of what we're seeing now is global design,'' says Valencia- based interior designer Pamela Jaffke. Although she's not a big believer in design trends, she has noticed that furniture manufacturers are looking to Asia, Africa, Latin America Latin America, the Spanish-speaking, Portuguese-speaking, and French-speaking countries (except Canada) of North America, South America, Central America, and the West Indies.  and the Middle East for products made from natural materials native to those countries.

As a result, the ethnic design trend is very strong this year, with zebra wood, Brazilian cherry, bamboo, copper, glass and glass block, shell and shell motifs appearing everywhere from Target to the high- end exclusive-to-the-trade catalogs.

HEIRLOOM/MODERN MIX

Jaffke also thinks more people are renovating because of a need to feel safe in a familiar environment. ``Because of natural disasters, people are appreciating their own homes more,'' she says.

That means more of her clients are asking her to incorporate family heirlooms with new furniture and accessories ``that look like they have a history, that are loved because of flaws, not in spite of them.''

COLORS

Perhaps the biggest hurdle for most people is choosing color schemes. In response to the global design trend, the popular shades for the year are those inspired by nature. Browns, particularly chocolate, light brown and beige, skin tones of all shades, blue-greens and sea greens are becoming much more popular. ``And earthy colors, but not like from the '70s. They're more complex,'' Jaffke says.

Eddie Byrd James Edward Byrd, III (born November 14, 1974), better known in the world as Eddie Byrd, is the owner and operator of the largely successful internet radio station, rock365.net. , an interior designer in West Hollywood West Hollywood

A community of southern California northeast of Beverly Hills. It is mainly residential. Population: 36,600.
, says that while chocolate and pinks have been very popular, he prefers the new oranges, aquas and golds.

It's a great idea to follow your own design impulse, says Van Nuys designer Erinn Valencich. ``Chairs are my favorite My Favorite is an independent synthpop band from Long Island, New York. They released two CDs: Love at Absolute Zero and Happiest Days of Our Lives. My Favorite broke up on September 14, 2005, when singer Andrea Vaughn left the band.  thing, and I think that's one place in your home where you can make a really bold statement,'' she says. Since chairs are easily reupholstered, people can experiment with color without permanent (and massively expensive) commitment.

Valencich predicts that teal a few shades darker than what has been available will make its mark this year. It'll be paired with the chocolate browns and lime greens, especially in upholstery.

THE GREAT OUTDOORS

Nature is also inspiring a lot of the new design trends, Byrd says. His favorite concept: bringing the indoors outside. Creating living spaces outdoors takes advantage of Southern California's mild climate and mostly sun-filled days and cloudless nights. Manufacturers have improved fade-resistant paints and dyes, making it easy to design beautiful outdoor pavilions and living rooms.

``Most of the new things on the market have to do with living outdoors,'' says Byrd, who is particularly impressed with the new upholstery fabrics that are beautiful enough for indoor use, yet tough enough to be cleaned with bleach. Hardware and drapery designed specifically for the outdoors can complete the look and last for years.

BLACK AND WHITE

If color is too much for you, rejoice: Black and white are coming back in solids, patterns and stripes. Pick a few accessories to freshen up Verb 1. freshen up - make brighter and prettier; "we refurbished the guest wing"; "My wife wants us to renovate"

STRIPES

Unfussy un·fuss·y

1. Not particular about or concerned with details.

2. Not cluttered or complicated, as with extraneous matters or details.
drapery with striped detail will also be hot, and it's another simple way to update the look of your home. Valencich suggests trying a wide black band across the bottom of a white background, chocolate with blue vertical stripes, or another color with two contrasting horizontal stripes at the top. With all the choices in color, fabrics and materials coming onto the market, it will be easy to incorporate new trends into your home. Whether you want an overhaul or just a few tweaks to your current style, there's something to appeal to every taste.

And admit it. It's fun to try on a new look. ``People should just not be afraid to try stuff. Just pick something, work with it, move it around,'' Valencich says. ``Just play with it - that's what I suggest.''
