INTENSIVE CARE NURSE NOMINATED FOR FIRST HOSPITAL HERO AWARDS.

VALENCIA -- Sheri Chessani, a nurse and clinical coordinator at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, is the hospital's nominee for the first National Health Foundation Hospital Hero Awards.

The honor notes outstanding achievements in medical centers within the region that the Hospital Association of Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  serves.

Sixteen hospital employees were considered for the honor.

``I was surprised and very honored,'' Chessani said. ``This was a personal high point in my career, but I work with so many heroes in the ICU ICU intensive care unit.

Employed at Newhall Memorial since graduating Ventura College Ventura College is a California-state funded community college located in Ventura, California. Established in 1925, the college has a 112-acre campus with an enrollment of 13,000 students. The college is part of the Ventura County Community College District.  in 1986, Chessani is certified in critical care and belongs to the American Association American Association refers to one of the following professional baseball leagues:
  • American Association (19th century), active from 1882 to 1891.
  • American Association (20th century), active from 1902 to 1962 and 1969 to 1997.
 of Critical Care Nurses. She is a supervisor in the intensive care unit and a member of the hospital's Rapid Response Team. Chessani has shared responsibility for saving 23 lives out of 151 calls since November 2005.

Besides her leadership and clinical skills, Chessani was cited for her expertise in handling the heart-wrenching situations that arise in the ICU.

``Sheri puts the needs of the patient and family first,'' said Dee Rickett, Chessani's supervisor. ``She always does the right thing and is gifted at helping patients die with as much dignity and as little pain as possible.

 and sensitive to the emotional, social and spiritual aspect of a patient's life, Sheri's never afraid to address end-of-life issues.''

About half the hospitals in the regional hospital association participate, spokeswoman Jennifer Bayer said. That amounts to 100 nominations in a region that covers Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. , Orange, Riverside, Santa Barbara Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850.  and Ventura counties. Chessani is eligible for the Los Angeles County and overall Southern California award.

``Our purpose is helping the broader community and media understand that it takes a community of people to make a hospital,'' Bayer said. ``We're getting enough variety to send that message.''

Winners will be announced at a Nov. 10 luncheon at the Los Angeles Westin Bonaventure Hotel The Westin Bonaventure Hotel is the largest hotel in Los Angeles, California, USA. It is 367 feet (112 meters) tall and has 35 floors. It was completed in 1977. The top floor has a revolving restaurant and observation level. .
