INTELSAT ANNOUNCES NEW SATELLITE LOCATION FOR CUSTOMERS
 IN THE ASIA/PACIFIC OCEAN REGION
WASHINGTON, June 26 /PRNewswire/ -- INTELSAT will establish a fourth service region by operating its 501 satellite at 91.5 degrees east longitude to provide expanded coverage and improved connectivity to the Asia/Pacific countries, beginning in the first half of 1993. The INTELSAT board of governors, at its recently concluded meeting, approved the relocation of the satellite to the new location.
"Satellites at these locations will provide more focused coverage of the Asian land mass as well as provide connectivity among all countries from Central/Eastern Europe through the Middle East to Japan, Australia and the Western Pacific islands," said John D. Hampton, INTELSAT's executive vice president, operations and services, in announcing the relocation. "This plan demonstrates INTELSAT's creative approach to enhance regional television distribution, business networks and other growing customer needs in the region," Hampton continued.
INTELSAT plans to follow up this new service by deploying the first INTELSAT VII-series satellite at 174 degrees east over the Pacific Ocean, after its scheduled launch in October 1993.
With headquarters in Washington, INTELSAT is the international, commercial cooperative of 124 member nations that owns and operates the global communications satellite system used worldwide by 180 member and non-member countries, territories and dependencies for their international and, in many instances, domestic communications.
The major provider of transoceanic telephone and television services, INTELSAT also offers via its 19-satellite global system such services as international video, teleconferencing, facsimile, data and telex.
