INTELLIGENT ELECTRONICS BECOMES IBM MIR, WILL DISTRIBUTE RISC SYSTEM/6000

EXTON, Pa., Jan. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Intelligent Electronics, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: INEL), has signed an agreement with IBM Corporation (NYSE: IBM) to become an IBM Managing Industry Remarketer (MIR). MIR status, a highly exclusive designation, authorizes Intelligent Electronics to market the IBM RISC System/6000 family of microcomputer products and to enter into agreements with resellers who wish to sell it in combination with specific solutions.
In finalizing the agreement, Intelligent Electronics becomes the only national aggregator that provides its resellers with solutions from IBM, Sun Microsystems, and Hewlett-Packard Company, the three premier suppliers of UNIX, RISC-based workstation and client server solutions.
Jim Ciccarelli, President of the Intelligent Electronics Reseller Network said, "Growing our advanced technology offerings is a top priority for us, and the MIR program adds a key piece to our advanced technology strategy."
Chief Operating Officer Mark Briggs concurred. "Industry trends make this agreement an especially valuable one," he said. "As the 90's progress, more and more vertical market businesses will be searching for specific application solutions, and an open, UNIX-based platform will be the system of choice for these solutions. The RISC System/6000 fits these trends perfectly, and resellers who are authorized to sell it will be poised to take advantage of an expanding market."
IBM PC Company Dealer Account Executive Susan Bailey expressed her company's satisfaction with the agreement. "IBM is excited about Intelligent's commitment to expanding the reach of the RS/6000 in the marketplace," she said. "The opportunity represented by this partnership is positive for existing Intelligent Electronics resellers, unaffiliated VARs and systems integrators, and most importantly, our customers."
As an MIR, Intelligent will recruit Intelligent Electronics Industry Remarketer Affiliates (IEIRAs). Ciccarelli noted that there are many advantages to becoming an IEIRA beyond the authorization itself. "We'll be providing them with a full range of services, including authorization assistance, reseller training and technical support," he said. The company plans to recruit IEIRAs from within its current network of more than 1,700 systems resellers and affiliates, and from current non- affiliated value-added resellers and systems integrators.
Although the final agreement was signed just last week, Intelligent Electronics RISC/6000 Product Manager Dave Paul estimated that the first products purchased under it could be available as early as February. "Several of our resellers began the IEIRA qualifying process last year, as soon as we announced that the program was a probable go,'" he said. "They were ready and waiting for the green light, and now they have it."
The IBM RISC System/6000 line represents IBM's UNIX RISC-based mid- range systems. They include desktop workstations and servers that run AIX, IBM's client-server operating system. High-powered workstations such as the IBM RISC System/6000 family provide tremendous power for individual applications. They also attach to host computers to share data and computing power in networks with thousands of nodes.
Intelligent Electronics is a leading delivery system of intelligent technologies. The Reseller Network Division, composed of more than 1,700 computer resellers and affiliates, provides sophisticated technology solutions to businesses in all 50 states of the nation.
