INTEGRATED HEALTH SERVICES OPENS 84 NEW SPECIALTY BEDS
AND ACQUIRES TWO SKILLED NURSING FACILITIES
HUNT VALLEY, Md., July 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Integrated Health Services, Inc. (NASDAQ: IHSI) today announced it has opened 84 additional beds in its national network of Medical Specialty Units (MSUs), which provide a variety of cost-effective, subacute care services traditionally given in a hospital. Separately, IHS also announced the acquisition of two skilled nursing facilities with a total of 280 beds, 60 of which will be upgraded to MSU beds.
"Opening 84 new MSU beds brings the total number of MSU beds to 439. This significantly puts the company ahead of its development plan of 500 MSU beds for fiscal 1992," said Robert N. Elkins, chairman, president and CEO. "In addition, the new facilities in Las Vegas and Charleston open up two new subacute markets to us."
The 84 additional MSU beds include 20 ventilator unit beds at the Clara Burke facility in Plymouth Meeting, Pa.; 24 complex care beds at the William & Mary facility in St. Petersburg, Fla.; 20 beds in a wound managament unit at the Crabtree Lane facility in Raleigh, N.C.; and 20 wound managemtn program beds at the Alpine North facility in Kansas City, Mo.
The two acquisitions are Silvercrest, a 120-bed skilled nursing facility in Las Vegas, and Driftwood on the Ashley, a 160-bed skilled nursing facility located in Charleston, S.C.
IHS uses geriatric care facilities as a platform for the company's MSU program which provides a wide range of subacute stage medical and rehabilitative services traditionally given in an acute care hospital. Patients who are medically stable but require sophisticated monitoring and therapy receive specialized care such as ventilator therapy, wound management and post-operative care. The MSU setting is both cost effective and less institutional. IHS currently operates 51 geriatric care facilities nationwide with more than 6,700 beds including a 439 bed network of MSU beds in 24 specialized units.
