INSTRUMENTAL ANNOUNCES FIRST ORDERS FOR UNIX PERFORMANCE MONITORING SOFTWARE

MINNEAPOLIS, Feb. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Instrumental Inc. today announced receipt of initial orders for PerfStat(TM) 1.0, its UNIX(R) performance monitoring software. Three orders, received between Jan. 27 and Feb. 4, are from the Minnesota Supercomputer Center Inc. (MSCI), the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC), and E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company (Du Pont). Through technology exchange agreements, PerfStat is also in use at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and Cray Research Inc. In its initial release, PerfStat runs on Cray Research systems.
PerfStat is the first product from Instrumental. PerfStat collects, interprets and graphs real-time process-level data, acting as an "instrument panel" for managing UNIX high-performance computer systems. The software helps data center staff monitor and tune the overall system workload, reduce turnaround time for critical jobs, and improve productivity of staff and end users.
MSCI has installed PerfStat on two Cray X-MP EA systems and will use it on the other Cray supercomputers in their center. MSCI Vice President of Technology John Eikum said, "We are impressed with the information that can be gathered and analyzed with PerfStat. Tools such as these are extremely beneficial in getting the most out of high- performance UNIX systems and we are pleased that Instrumental is providing them."
SDSC installed PerfStat on a Cray Y-MP/8. SDSC Manager of Systems and Software Dr. Reagan Moore said, "The statistics we can obtain with PerfStat are essential for understanding our workload's I/O requirements. This will enable us to do a much better job of I/O capacity planning for our pending Cray Y-MP C90 installation, which will ensure we get the most out of our system. This type of information is also critical to the success of emerging alternative high-performance architectures such as massively parallel systems and clustered workstations."
Du Pont will install PerfStat on a Cray Y-MP in February. Cray Research and NCAR have been using PerfStat since late 1992 to monitor and improve performance on Cray Y-MPs.
Future versions of PerfStat will be developed for other UNIX high- performance computing systems, including clustered workstation processing systems and networks. Instrumental plans to develop an expert system that will not only monitor system performance, but also make recommendations regarding system tuning.
Instrumental President and Chief Executive Officer Rene G. Copeland said, "We hope to do for UNIX high-performance and clustered workstation computing what has been done for years for traditional IBM environments: provide data center staff with tools that tell them, in real time, what's happening in the system and which users are consuming resources. This information helps them tune the overall system, better manage usage and plan for future needs."
Instrumental Inc., located in Minneapolis, creates, markets and supports graphics-oriented productivity tools for high-performance UNIX computer systems and their associated networks. In addition to software tools, Instrumental offers training and consulting services, system tuning, capacity planning and benchmark design and evaluation.
