INSTANT GRANDPARENT; YOUNGSTERS READY FOR YOU TO READ AT LIBRARY.

Byline: Carol Bidwell Daily News Staff Writer

A grandparent who'll read a story is most kids' dream.

And that dream is available - courtesy of dozens of volunteers (who don't actually have to be grandparents grandparents nplabuelos mpl

``I'm there to make books exciting,'' said Gail Hancock, 54, a Woodland Hills legal secretary who's a mom (1) (Messaging-Oriented Middleware) See messaging middleware.

but not a grandmom. She reads to kids at the Platt Branch Library in Woodland Hills on Monday and Wednesday evenings - and loves it.

``I'm not a teacher. I'm more of an entertainer,'' she said. ``The kids pick a book, and I read it with all the different voices - a big `giant' voice and a little `mouse' voice. It's a blast. This is where I get my charge for the week.''

Marjette Kruger, 74, of Encino, a retired high school and university drama teacher, had never worked with small children before becoming a grandparent reader two years ago.

``But it's turned out to be great fun,'' said the mother of two grown sons, who reads to kids on Wednesday afternoons at the Encino-Tarzana Branch Library.

``It's a fascinating job. I made a felt board, and, as I read the story, the kids move the figures around to follow the action. They really seem to enjoy it,'' she said. ``Even though I'm holding the book, they can still see what's going on What's Going On is a record by American soul singer Marvin Gaye. Volunteers, who can choose to read at a variety of times and at library branches throughout the Valley, must attend a training workshop. Training sessions are scheduled Sept. 24 and Oct. 1 at the Sun Valley Branch Library, 7935 Vineland Ave.
