VALLEY GLEN - Lamia Lamia (lā`mēə), in Greek mythology, grief-crazed woman whose name was used to frighten children. Her own children were killed by Hera, who was jealous of Zeus' love for her; thereafter Lamia, out of envy for happy mothers, stole and  Rahman, 21, of Panorama City got good news this week: She'll be attending California State University, Northridge CSUN offers a variety of programs leading to bachelor's degrees in 61 fields and master's degrees in 42 fields. The university has over 150,000 alumni. It's also home to a summer musical theater/theater program known as TADW (TeenAge Drama Workshop) that leads teenagers through an , next fall.

``I'm so happy,'' said the future elementary school teacher. ``It is so helpful. If they hadn't come here, I wouldn't know what to do. They helped me with my application. This is a big deal for me to get into such a good school.''

CSUN recruitment officials and representatives from all eight academic colleges, financial aid and student housing offices, and other organizations were on the LAVC campus Thursday to answer questions and process students' applications.

Leroy Geter, CSUN transfer director, said LAVC students seemed well- prepared and enthusiastic, mobbing the tables before they were fully set up.

In order to process an application, students needed to have a completed waiver form, transcripts and a $55 application fee. They also needed to have at least 56 transferable units for spring 2005, and 60 units for fall 2005; a 2.0 GPA GPA

Edith Keipinger, 36, of Van Nuys, didn't get accepted - she still needs to take one more math class.

``Statistics. I had no idea that was a requirement,'' said the future nurse and single mother of two. ``I knew there was a math requirement, but I had the wrong math class.''

But she added: ``It is helpful to be able to talk to a real person instead of a computer. I've been trying to apply online, but it's hard because you're at the mercy of the webmaster and sometimes Web sites don't work.''

Synthia Saltoun, director of the career transfer center at LAVC, said the admissions day not only should ``demystify'' the process for Valley students preparing to transfer but also may encourage some students who might not even be considering transferring, ``because they don't know that CSUN is within their reach.''

CSUN officials will be on the Moorpark College campus Thursday, and at Santa Monica College Santa Monica College was first opened in 1929 as Santa Monica Junior College. Current enrollment is 32,000 students in more than 90 fields of study. The college also has one of the largest international student populations of any community college in the US, with approximately  on Nov. 2 for on-site admissions.
