Stedman Graham Stedman Graham (born March 6, 1951 in Whitesboro, New Jersey) is an American educator, author, businessman, speaker and served in the United States Army, although he is mainly known as the partner of media mogul Oprah Winfrey.  is an accomplished lecturer, author, professor and businessman, but he also knows how most people first think of him.

"Who's coming to talk to you today?" he asked a crowd of 600 at Northwest Christian College's Morse Events Center on Monday night. "You were all saying, `Oprah Winfrey's boyfriend' is coming to talk to you today."

The comment drew laughs, but Graham, keynote speaker for the 20th annual communitywide celebration of Martin Luther King Jr., also was trying to make a point: Don't let others define who you are on the basis of your race, gender, possessions - or significant other.

"When you don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

"Don't know the trade." A Street expression used whenever one party lacks knowledge of a trade or receives conflicting instructions from the other party.
who you are, the world defines you," said Graham in a 25-minute motivational speech that borrowed liberally from his best-selling book, "You Can Make It Happen: A Nine-Step Plan for Success."

Graham said part of King's message was that people should be the best they can be, no matter what their station in life. Quoting King, he said: "If you are called to be a street sweeper, sweep streets even as Michelangelo painted ... or Shakespeare wrote poetry. Sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, `Here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well.' '

Graham said King would concur with the message that people must believe in themselves and follow their passion.

"Anyone can get a job, but can you get a life?" Graham asked. "When Dr. King said, `I have a dream,' he was focusing on `Get a life.' He said, `I have a dream,' but guess what, that was his dream. Where is your dream for your life?"

Graham's address culminated a 90-minute program that often had the feel of a religious revival Religious revival may refer to

It was a heady day for Gelman, who earlier received a human rights leadership award from the Springfield Alliance for Equality and Respect.

Committee Chairman Greg Evans and Springfield Mayor Sid Leiken praised Gelman, a single parent of three, as a shining example of someone who had overcome immense obstacles - including domestic abuse and homelessness - to earn her degree and then find a job where she helps others.

In brief comments, Gelman said she wished to share the award with the many in the community who helped her on her path.

When she was homeless, "I felt as if my spirit was broken," she said. "But I had nowhere to go but up. ... We must continue to fight for those who don't have a voice for themselves."
