INSPIRATION FROM ABOVE MONK CAPTURES 'SEASONS IN THE DESERT'.

PALMDALE - A Benedictine monk's pastel pastel (păstĕl`), artists' medium of chalk and pigment, tempered with weak gum water and usually molded in the form of sticks; also a work done in this medium. Pastel was in use in Italy in the 15th cent. and is doubtless much older.  scenics depict the natural beauty of St. Andrew's Abbey St. Andrew's Abbey is a Benedictine monastery of men located in Valyermo, California. In 1929, St. Andrew's Abbey in Bruges, Belgium founded St. Andrew's Priory in China. Until 1953, the monks of St. Andrew's Priory conducted missionary work among the Chinese.  outside Valyermo.

The Rev. Werner Papeians De Morchoven's art is on display in a show called ``Seasons in the Desert'' through June 14 at the Palmdale Playhouse, 38334 10th St. E.

De Morchoven is one of the monks who founded St. Andrew's after their order was expelled from China after the communist takeover in 1949.

He began painting watercolors as a boy in Belgium. At 18, he entered a Benedictine abbey in Belgium and after his priestly priest·ly

In China, he was invited to teach drawing and painting at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Szechwan.

 monastery at a former ranch, De Morchoven found time to capture in pastels the monastery's 1,750-acre premises.

Gallery hours are noon to 4 p.m. Tuesdays and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursdays. The gallery is open to the public and admission is free. For more information, call the (661) 267-5684.
