), the provider of the world's largest commercial collection of searchable full-text patent information, has added two new search enhancements: "Find Similar," a concept search tool in PatSearch FullText; and, PatSearch INPADOC INPADOC International Patent Documentation Center , a new searchable database Refers to databases on the Web that are searchable by typing in a query. The term is quite redundant because all databases are searchable. In fact, that is one of their major features.  including global legal status information.

"We're pleased to provide our customers with unique, proprietary search tools and more content to enhance the quality of their research," said Jay Nadler, president of IHI's Intellectual Property Group. "MicroPatent is committed to continuously expanding the breadth of its data and offering state-of-the-art search tools and analytics. Future enhancements include the addition of DOC.db data, enhanced patent alerts, and advanced concept searching technology, all of which will allow our customers to generate superior results as compared to patent abstracting services."

Find Similar is a concept search tool that extracts words from one or more source documents, constructs a query, re-runs it against the millions of records within MicroPatent's PatSearch FullText database, and ranks the results by relevancy. It may be accessed from a single patent record or from multiple documents selected simultaneously. Find Similar queries are run against MicroPatent's full-text data collection, which covers US granted patents from 1836, US-A from 2001, EP-A & B from 1988, DE-A & C from 1989, GB-A from 1919, PCT (Private Communications Technology) A protocol from Microsoft that provides secure transactions over the Web. See security protocol.  from 1978, and JP published applications bibliographic data only from 1976.

MicroPatent's INPADOC database is sourced from the European Patent Office (EPO EPO

spans from 1968 to present and is updated on a weekly basis.

The addition of INPADOC is the first phase of a larger project at MicroPatent that entails enhancing searchable content with data from other sources. The next stage, scheduled for release by year end, involves adding DOC.db data (the EPO's bibliographic database) to INPADOC. This will provide even more extensive coverage, with records dating back to 1920, as well as European Classification The European Classification (ECLA) is a patent classification system maintained by the European Patent Office (EPO). The ECLA classification system contains 134 000 subdivisions and is an extension of the International Patent Classification system.  (ECLA ECLA n abbr (= Economic Commission for Latin America) → CEPAL f ) updates.

Initial Find Similar feedback indicates that this tool can uncover art more relevant than the examiner's citations, according to Israel Agranov, Ph.D. and senior vice president with MicroPatent's professional research division (Woolcott). Additionally, Roy Zimmerman, patent information specialist at Medtronic, stated that, "One test search produced a small group of highly relevant answers compared to the multi-set- terms-of-art/ patent-class search run previously. The most relevant answers, including the starting reference and a foreign counterpart, were more obvious amidst the limited retrieval."

Find Similar and PatSearch INPADOC are free through the end of November. Viewing legal status information is accessible with a paid subscription.
