LANCASTER -- Bill Strickland Bill Strickland (b. 1947) is the founder and CEO of the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild, an innovative agency in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania that uses the arts to inspire inner-city teenagers. , the founder of an agency that uses the arts to inspire inner-city teens, will be the featured speaker of Lancaster's Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration.

Strickland will be part of a celebration that will be geared toward spurring community involvement. The celebration will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Lancaster Performing Arts Center A performing arts center, often abbreviated PAC, is a multi-use performance space that can be adapted for use by various types of the performing arts, including dance, music and theatre. , 750 W. Lancaster Blvd.

The program also is scheduled to include a video tribute to King, testimonials from residents, and special musical performances by the Antelope Valley High School Antelope Valley High School is located in Lancaster, California and is part of the Antelope Valley Union High School District. It was founded in 1912[1]. It is located in the Mojave Desert.  Choir and Alyssa Rossi.

Mayor Henry Hearns will announce plans for next year's King Day celebration in which the event will transition from a day of remembrance to a day of community action.

``Next year, Martin Luther King Jr. Day will not be a day off, but a day on,'' Hearns said. ``It's a chance for a day of service, where community members can come together across the Antelope Valley to work toward the dream of a stronger, more united region.''

Strickland is the founder and chief executive officer of the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild is a nonprofit a multi-discipline learning community established in 1968 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA.

Its programs include MCG Jazz, MCG Youth and the Denali Initiative.

The organization is the brainchild of Bill Strickland.
, an organization that began by giving ceramics classes to inner-city youths in an abandoned row house in Pittsburgh.

That organization has grown from a home for arts classes to include a center for the preservation of jazz in America and home to the Bidwell Training Center, a vocational school that prepares laid-off workers and at-risk youths for careers in a variety of fields. The guild has grown into a nonprofit organization Nonprofit Organization

An association that is given tax-free status. Donations to a non-profit organization are often tax deductible as well.

Strickland's work earned him a MacArthur Fellows grant in 1996. Sometimes called a ``genius grant,'' it is awarded to those who have demonstrated significant achievement in their fields and show the potential for future advances.

Strickland also is a member of the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities The President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities was established in Washington, DC in 1982 by an Executive Order from President Ronald Reagan. The Committee's role is to identify issues and develop initiatives in the arts and the humanities that the President and Committee . The committee helps to underscore the civic, social, educational and historical value of arts and humanities in the nation.
