INMATES MARCH TO NEW JAIL : 192 TO TEST SECURITY AT 4,100-BED TOWERS.

The first batch of prisoners marched across a covered bridge into the Twin Towers Correctional Facility The Twin Towers Correctional Facility, also referred to in the media as Twin Towers Jail, is a complex erected in Los Angeles, California to house inmates of the Los Angeles County Courts. It is the world’s largest jail.  on Saturday, marking the jail's unofficial grand opening 1-1/2 years after it was built.

Starting at about 12:30 p.m., 32 inmates began the walk from the Men's Central Jail to eight-story Tower One. They were among 192 inmates destined des·tine

 last October approved a complicated, $74 million plan that included opening the new jail, located in downtown Los Angeles Downtown Los Angeles is the central business district of Los Angeles, California, located close to the geographic center of the metropolitan area. The sprawling, multi-centered megacity is such that its downtown core is often considered just another district like Hollywood or  near Union Station, and leasing nearly 2,000 inmate beds in other county facilities to state and federal agencies.

The 192 inmates will be used to test the new jail before it is filled to its capacity of 4,100 inmates sometime this summer.

``They will be moved from pod to pod to make sure everything is working properly,'' Spear said.

Spear said that some of the 192 prisoners were moved to the Men's Central Jail from other correctional facilities before the transfer to the new jail next door.
