INMATE FOUND AFTER ESCAPE TEEN-AGERS FIND PITCHESS PRISONER.

Byline: Holly Edwards Staff Writer

CASTAIC - A medium-security inmate who escaped Tuesday morning from the Pitchess Detention Center A detention center or a detention centre is any location used for detention. Specifically, it can mean:
  • A prison
  • A structure for immigration detention
  • An internment camp or concentration camp
was found hiding in a bush near the prison complex after three teen-age boys saw him and flagged down a sheriff's sergeant, officials said.

Edgar Ornelas, 22, of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  was returned to the jail about four hours after he escaped from an inmate fire crew training exercise. He was the second inmate in less than two weeks to escape from a county jail.

Barefoot and wearing a blue T-shirt and shorts rather than his orange prison uniform, Ornelas showed little emotion as he was led out of the patrol car to be photographed by investigators.

He was expected to be transported to the inmate reception center at the Twin Towers Detention Center to be booked on a felony escape charge.

Investigators say Ornelas will be considered a high escape risk for the duration of his jail term, and will be transferred to a high-security unit at Men's Central Jail.

``His days of being outside in the sunshine are over,'' said Detective Mike Staley of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Major Crimes Bureau. ``Even if he's picked up on a jaywalking jay·walk

He was among a group of about 48 inmates on the fire crew who were doing exercises and hiking through the hillsides surrounding the jail.

When the group returned from the hike just before 10 a.m., Ornelas was missing, said Deputy Daniel Andrews Daniel Andrews (born 6 July, 1972) is an Australian politician. He is the Minister for Health in the Brumby Labor Government. He has been an Australian Labor Party member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly since November 2002, representing the electorate of Mulgrave, and was , the fire suppression deputy at the jail.

At the time of the escape, the inmates were being supervised by three members of the county Fire Department, Andrews said, adding that only nonviolent inmates with a history of good behavior Orderly and lawful action; conduct that is deemed proper for a peaceful and law-abiding individual.

are allowed to serve on the fire crew.

After the escape, Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  sheriff's deputies on patrol were placed on alert, deputies searched the prison grounds from nearby hillsides, and a Sheriff's Department helicopter swarmed over the facility.

Meanwhile, a 13-year-old and two 15-year-old boys riding along The Old Road on a bus spotted Ornelas hiding in a bush near Parker Road. When they saw a sheriff's sergeant on patrol near Hillcrest Road, they ran off the bus and told him what they had seen.

Deputy Brian Lendman was the closest to Parker Road and immediately drove to the area where Ornelas had been seen.

``I just pulled up and got out of the car with my gun drawn, and he walked out of the bush with his hands up,'' Lendman said.

The caper caper, common name for members of the Capparidaceae, a family of tropical plants found chiefly in the Old World and closely related to the family Cruciferae (mustard family).  will likely add a year to Ornelas' sentence, Staley said.

``I've interviewed a lot of these guys that walk off, and a lot of times they have problems at home,'' he said. ``I think this guy has a new kid at home, so maybe that's why he was trying to get back.''
