TEXT COMES IN MANY FORMS

Today, companies invest heavily in managing numeric information such as sales figures sales figures nplcifras fpl de ventas , inventory levels, or labor costs. However, an equally valuable store of unstructured and semi-structured textual information -- such as contracts, regulations, policies, competitive intelligence, electronic mail, or customer and prospect profiles -- also exists. As with numeric information, when organizations take control of textual information, they gain control of key business processes such as customer support, lead tracking, or other types of collaborative col·lab·o·rate

tool suite built expressly for the needs of text management. Relational data fields are fairly predictable in size and type (U.S telephone numbers, for example, are ten numeric characters). But textual information can vary widely. For example, a medical diagnosis can vary in length from a few dozen words to thousands of words. With rigid relational structures, it is impossible to cope with these varying data formats and sizes.

DB/TEXTWORKS FEATURES/BENEFITS

Inmagic DB/TextWorks is a textbase -- a robust database management system designed exclusively to manage text. It resides on PCs, LANs, or WANs, enabling individuals, workgroups See workgroup, workgroup-based network and Windows for Workgroups. , or the enterprise to store, access, display, and report textual information. Adjective
DBMSs, DB/TextWorks is designed from the ground up as a text DBMS, or textbase. Inmagic DB/TextWorks unique architecture provides:
o Instant text retrieval -- Since you can index virtually all
fields in a DB/TextWorks textbase, search speeds are instantaneous.
For example, in a 200,000-record textbase, a keyword search takes
less than one second. In typical relational databases, where text
fields can't be indexed, the same search can exceed three minutes.
These search speeds are consistent and predictable, even as textbase
sizes increase into millions of records.

o Variable-length fields -- Database design does not hinge on
pre-defined lengths for each field in the record. Users enter or
import data in any and all DB/TextWorks fields without regard to the
length of the text string. Whether it s two words or two thousand
pages, data is not truncated by fixed-field limits.

o Repeating fields -- Every field in an Inmagic DB/TextWorks
record can have an unlimited number of entries. For example, to
manage correspondence a textbase would include a field for
RECIPIENTS. The first record might have 4 entries for recipients of
a memo. However, the next record might be for a letter sent to 12
recipients. With repeating fields, DB/TextWorks records adapt to the
shape of the information that is entered -- dynamically. These
"on-demand" repeating fields simplify textbase design.

o Integrated Imaging -- You can seamlessly link color,
grayscale, and black-and-white images to textbases, where they can
be stored, retrieved, displayed, and printed. More than 30 image
file formats are supported, including TIFF, JPEG, BMP, and PCX.

    o Linked Textbases -- Inmagic DB/TextWorks uses "relational-like"
textbase linking to reduce maintenance by eliminating redundant data.
Information in one textbase can be linked to another, where it can be
searched, displayed, sorted, printed, and so on.

FASTER AND MORE FLEXIBLE THAN A RELATIONAL DBMS

Like traditional DBMSs, DB/TextWorks imports and indexes data and
stores it in records and fields, which permits searching, sorting,
displaying, and reporting. However, DB/TextWorks accomplishes this
without the constraints of relational databases, which can't index or
quickly search textual information. Searches in relational products
such as Access or Paradox that can take three to five minutes can
be performed in DB/TextWorks in one to two seconds.
Relational databases attempt to solve text-management through
"Memo" fields. However, Memos cannot be indexed, which slows search
speeds to a crawl. In addition, a relational DBMS can typically
support only one Memo field per record.

MORE CONTROL THAN MERE TEXT-RETRIEVAL

Traditional text-retrieval systems have also sought to address
text management challenges. While these products can quickly search
through large, inert documents (electronic books), they lack the
structure of a true textbase. Information in text-retrieval products
always maintains its singular, monolithic structure, similar to a
word-processing file. As a result, users can't selectively extract
information, scan summaries of "hits," sort query results, or use a
report writer to prepare and present different views.

BETA REPORTS POSITIVE

Inmagic DB/TextWorks is currently in beta test at several
customer sites. According to Anthony Giacchetto, Information and
Marketing Projects Manager at Direct Marketing Associations,
DB/TextWorks promises to be a valuable addition to the corporate
information system. "Because all the fields are unlimited in length,
I can fit as much text as I want into records. Just as important, I
can index that text for instantaneous retrieval."

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS To be used efficiently, all computer software needs certain hardware components or other software resources to be present on a computer system. These pre-requisites are known as (computer) system requirements and are often used as a guideline as opposed to an absolute rule.

- Windows 3.1

- 4MB RAM (8MB recommended)

- <10 MB disk storage for program

- Networks: All supported by Windows

- Printers: All supported by Windows
