INHALED-INSULIN TESTS PLANNED MANNKIND CORP. ENROLLING PATIENTS IN PHASE 3 SAFETY TRIAL.

Byline: Daily News

VALENCIA - MannKind Corp. of Valencia has begun enrolling patients in its two-year phase 3 safety trial of inhaled insulin to evaluate its pulmonary safety in diabetics.

Testing in Europe began late last year and, so far, shows the inhaled insulin is more rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream, improving glucose control without increasing the risk of hypoglycemia hypoglycemia: see diabetes.

Below-normal levels of blood glucose, quickly reversed by administration of oral or intravenous glucose. Even brief episodes can produce severe brain dysfunction.
. The system shows the inhaled insulin mimics normal insulin release.

MannKind presented data on its progress earlier this month at the American Diabetes Association The American Diabetes Association, or the ADA, is an American health organization providing diabetes research, information and advocacy. Founded in 1940, the American Diabetes Association conducts programs in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, reaching hundreds of  scientific sessions.

``We hope to obtain further confirmation of these findings in our phase 3 studies, moving this important new treatment for diabetes closer to commercialization,'' said Hakan Edstrom, president and chief operating officer Chief Operating Officer (COO)
