'2 Billion Dollar Bound' Internal Sales Promotion
Puts Ingram Micro Over The Top
SANTA ANA, Calif., Jan. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Ingram Micro announced record fourth quarter and year-end sales for the period ending Dec. 27, 1991. For the fourth quarter, the company had sales of $611,000,000 and for the full year $2,008,000,000. These figures represent increases in sales of 41 percent for the fourth quarter and 38 percent for the year over the sales achieved by Ingram Micro in 1990.
"We are excited that Ingram Micro met two milestones in one quarter," said Chip Lacy, Ingram Micro chairman and chief executive officer. "Ingram Micro exceeded $2,000,000,000 in sales in a year and $600,000,000 in a single quarter. These are firsts not only for us but are record achievements for all microcomputer or industrial electronics distributors. Wholesale microcomputer products distribution is growing in importance with Ingram Micro leading the way."
Lacy further noted, "We've benefited from strong market demand for our broad assortment of microcomputer products, now more than 12,000. Throughout 1991, more microcomputer resellers continued to ratify Ingram Micro as their preferred choice. This is substantiated by our ability to continue to gain share by growing faster than the overall microcomputer market as well as the microcomputer distribution market. We increased market share in all seven countries we serve."
David R. Dukes, Ingram Micro president and chellent demand in all domestic market segments with the greatest growth coming from the computer superstore/mass market and VAR/systems integrator segments. We take particular pride in the success of our six focused marketing divisions. These divisions allow us to serve diverse markets with the appropriate product mix and related services."
Dukes added, "We attribute our gains in market share in large measure to the operations of our focused divisions. They have proven effective. We estimate our domestic share of all microcomputer distributor sales to now be 27 percent -- and growing."
According to Lacy, Ingram Micro's Technical Products Division (TPD), which provides more complex software and hardware to the VAR and systems integrator market segments, grew to $380 million in sales, from 1990's $230 million. "This robust growth in TPD's sales demonstrates our continuing penetration of the VAR and systems integration markets. TPD's 65 percent sales growth in 1991 is a clear indicator that we gained share in this important value-added segment."
Ingram Micro's international sales growth continued to exceed the growth of domestic sales. For the fourth quarter, international sales grew 88 percent and for the full year 96 percent. The company's international sales benefited from two acquisitions in the United Kingdom in 1991. Ron Hardaway, Ingram Micro senior vice president and chief financial officer, said "International sales exceeded a quarter billion dollars in 1991."
Ingram Micro's executive management cited the company's outstanding service, support and execution as the fundamental reasons for the continuing success in winning resellers' business. Lacy and Dukes singled out Ingram Micro's 1,900 worldwide employees for special thanks for their dedication, hard work and commitment.
Ingram Micro ran an internal worldwide sales contest in the fourth quarter for its employees called "2 Billion Dollar Bound." The program included sales chart thermometers in every warehouse and office that mapped the steadily rising temperature of sales growth as it neared the $2 billion target. Other related activities included "2 Billion Dollar Bound" employee sport shirts, pep rallies and other day-to-day promotional activities.
"We set a very aggressive target for ourselves with the '2 Billion Dollar Bound Contest,'" said Dukes. "It created a lot of internal interest and succeeded in rallying our efforts to achieve our company- wide sales goals. Ingram Micro passed the hurdle on the last day of the fiscal year and every operating unit in the company contributed."
