(R) Studio. Since FieldManager's deployment four years ago, the State of Michigan has realized an annual savings of more than $21 million due to more cost effective management of people, equipment and materials.

"This has been the most successful software development I've seen in my career," said Doug Couto, agency services information officer of Michigan Department of Transportation, DMB (Digital Multimedia Broadcasting) See mobile TV. , Civil Service, Civil Rights and Department of Information Technology. "It is a quality application that is enthusiastically accepted by users. This has truly been a team effort with InfoTech bringing an extremely successful solution that results in greater efficiencies, reliability, and a demand for more functions. Sybase was the right choice for the Department of Transportation. We solved current business challenges and have positioned the infrastructure to handle future needs."

"We are excited that our application development and mobile database technologies allowed MDOT and InfoTech to experience dramatic improvements in productivity and cost-savings," said Raj Nathan, senior vice president and general manager, Infrastructure Platform Group at Sybase. "Through products like PowerBuilder, Pocket PowerBuilder and SQL Anywhere Studio, we are enabling our government and enterprise clients to 'unwire' their infrastructures and synchronize their data, allowing mobile workers access to mission-critical information when and where they need it."

Sybase PowerBuilder was used to develop an intuitive interface that works closely with established MDOT business practices, as well as maintaining dynamic capabilities. This allows the system to integrate with the business practices of related construction project management units, including local government agencies and private engineering firms. Sybase PowerBuilder provides the ability to turn functionality on and off at the agency level, while the system's client/server capability utilizes Open DataBase Connectivity See ODBC.

The FieldManager software also leverages SQL Anywhere Studio from Sybase subsidiary iAnywhere Solutions iAnywhere Solutions, Inc., a subsidiary of Sybase, Inc., (NYSE: SY) is a software company specializing in mobility (mobile computing), management and security and enterprise caliber database software.  as the embedded database (1) Database software that is included with an application rather than offered as a separate database management system (see DBMS). This enables mobile workers to enter and access information using a laptop computer synchronizing all changes with the organization's back-end database A back-end database is a database that is accessed by users indirectly through an external application rather than by application programming stored within the database itself or by low level manipulation of the data (e.g. through SQL commands). . Using this mobile solution, MDOT technicians can automatically generate payment estimates on-site, providing more timely and accurate invoicing. By providing "always available" access to business critical information, regardless of network availability, SQL Anywhere Studio ensures that construction managers work as effectively in the field as in their office.

The FieldManager suite of software is currently in use at 43 MDOT offices, 128 local agencies, and over 100 private firms in Michigan. It has processed over $1.5 billion in road construction projects for the MDOT in 2002 alone, and more than $5 billion since its roll-out in 1999. As a result of their innovative use of technology to change the way construction tasks are performed, the Michigan Department of Transportation, Info Tech Inc. and Sybase were jointly recognized this year as a 2003 Computerworld Honors Laureate award finalist.
