INFOTECH DEVELOPS FIELDMANAGER SOFTWARE APPLICATION.

Sybase, Inc. (NYSE:SY), Dublin, Calif., an enterprise infrastructure and integration company, has announced the success of an innovative project management application developed by its partner, Info Tech, Inc., and deployed by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) to speed and simplify the completion of road and bridge construction projects. The software application, called FieldManager, was developed by InfoTech using Sybase(R) PowerBuilder(R) and SQL Anywhere(R) Studio. Since FieldManager's deployment four years ago, the State of Michigan has realized an annual savings of more than $21 million due to more cost effective management of people, equipment and materials.

Sybase PowerBuilder was used to develop an intuitive interface that works closely with established MDOT business practices, as well as maintaining dynamic capabilities. This allows the system to integrate with the business practices of related construction project management units, including local government agencies and private engineering firms. Sybase PowerBuilder provides the ability to turn functionality on and off at the agency level, while the system's client/server capability utilizes Open DataBase Connectivity (ODBC) to provide a connection to the Sybase database, allowing for advanced user support through the ability to connect to various data sources.

The FieldManager software also leverages SQL Anywhere Studio from Sybase subsidiary iAnywhere Solutions as the embedded database powering the application. This enables mobile workers to enter and access information using a laptop computer synchronizing all changes with the organization's back-end database. Using this mobile solution, MDOT technicians can automatically generate payment estimates on-site, providing more timely and accurate invoicing. By providing "always available" access to business critical information, regardless of network availability, SQL Anywhere Studio ensures that construction managers work as effectively in the field as in their office.

The FieldManager suite of software is currently in use at 43 MDOT offices, 128 local agencies, and over 100 private firms in Michigan. It has processed over $1.5 billion in road construction projects for the MDOT in 2002 alone, and more than $5 billion since its roll-out in 1999. As a result of their innovative use of technology to change the way construction tasks are performed, the Michigan Department of Transportation, Info Tech Inc. and Sybase were jointly recognized this year as a 2003 Computerworld Honors Laureate award finalist.
