INFORMATION ACCESS CO. BEGINS IMPLEMENTATION FOR THE INFORMATION ACCESS CENTER

FOSTER CITY, Calif., Dec. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Information Access Co. announced today it has begun the implementation process for the Information Access Center, a breakthrough first announced at the American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference in June. Data Research, a leading automation vendor, will provide the first link to the Center. Information Access Co. is currently working with several other OPAC vendors to facilitate this same connection to the Information Access Center.
This first phase provides Data Research customers with the option of accessing several Information Access Co. databases remotely stored at the Information Access Center. These databases include: General Periodicals Index-Public Edition(TM), Expanded Academic Index(TM), Business Index(TM), and Magazine Index Plus(TM).
Full text in both ASCII and image formats will accompany these index/abstract databases to provide push-button access to cited articles from nearly 1,000 general reference, academic and business journals.
Using the Information Access Center, patrons may search, select and retrieve documents using the popular InfoTrac interface. The ASCII text of the article may be viewed at any of the OPAC terminals. Patrons can request an image copy of the article, including graphs, tables, charts or other graphic elements. The document is then delivered to a designated print/delivery station. The link between the Data Research system and the Information Access Center is implemented using the Internet.
The first Data Research clients to serve as Beta test sites for access to the Center are Boston Public Library and Georgia Southern University.
In announcing this roll-out, Information Access Co. Vice President of Library Sales and Marketing Sean Devine said, "The Information Access Center provides many patrons the ability to simultaneously access large amounts of data at once at a manageable cost. We are excited to be offering this capability first through Data Research. We look forward to including more vendors in this project, as well as presenting enhanced capabilities with InfoTrac 2000 Information Delivery Systems."
Information Access Co. first announced the capabilities of the Information Access Center at ALA in June. This breakthrough gives libraries new options for accessing databases and receiving cited documents with images. The Information Access Center, located in Medford, Mass., stores InfoTrac databases and scanned electronic images. Of key importance is the ability the Center provides to access large databases across a library's network without the costs and management issues associated with local loading of data. Also, the Center makes weekly updates feasible and provides access to more retrospective coverage.
Data Research, headquartered in St. Louis, is a leading systems integrator. The company provides its own proprietary information services as well as third-party software and hardware, networking services and other related services to libraries and other information providers.
Information Access Co. offers a complete range of business, academic, legal, health, computer and general reference products in CD-ROM, online, microfilm and magnetic tape formats.
These products are used in public, academic, secondary school and corporate libraries, as well as offices and homes via personal computers. Information Access Co. is based in Foster City, and is a division of Ziff Communications.
