INDUSTRY SOLID, SAYS FORMER MPAA HEAD.

Byline: Rick Orlov Staff Writer

For 38 years, Jack Valenti was Hollywood's voice in Washington, D.C., walking the corridors of power and fighting to protect the movie industry.

On Friday, Valenti offered an upbeat perspective of the industry - despite a slow year - as he received a key to the city of Los Angeles

 for his efforts.

``No matter what you see, Hollywood and the movie industry will always be there,'' Valenti said. ``No matter what technology emerges, it is still going to need a product that people want to see.

``There might be problems this year, but it runs in cycles. This is still the greatest industry and is one where the balance of trade is in our favor.''

Valenti said he believes the trailing box-office receipts this year are only temporary setback setback

``We've heard it before, and this industry always comes back,'' said Valenti, who retired this year as head of the Motion Picture Association of America.

Valenti, a native of Texas, flew 51 missions over Europe in World War II. He worked for then-Sen. Lyndon B. Johnson and was in the motorcade in Dallas on Nov. 22, 1963, when President Kennedy was assassinated as·sas·si·nate
